Need a 29er boost wheelset.  Will generally be using 2.3-2.5 inch width tyres.  Looking for something that is moderately strong (going on a trail bike, but no big air), low maintenance, as light as possible, tubeless ready, and an appropriate rim width for the tyre size. Under £500 would be nice, so not in carbon territory unfortunately.  I suspect a XC wheel would be up to the job, if wide enough.

I don't really know what is out there, or what to expect for that budget, so any recommendations appreciated.

I went with DT EX511 on Hope Pro 4 hubs, buit and sold by Moonglu for exactly £500.

Not the lightest but so far they fair well under my 4.7 tonnes over trail centre and moors/peaks type rides.

Fitted with 2.35 tyres and don't seem overly square on the wide rim.

In the same boat as you. Would love some DT Swiss xm1501 but the 30mm inner are top dollar. I have see the 25mm inner rims for cheaper.

But think I’m gona get some Stans flow mk3 wheels (with bitex hubs) from JRA. £400. Good weight. 29mm inner rim width and should be strong enough

Great configuration web page for custom wheels:

actionsports.de

Bought boost wheelsets there. Cheapest solution is with their FunWorks rims. I normally go with low cost DT 370 rims and 6 hole brake rotor mount.

Good quality custom wheels, quick shipment, great service.

Price range: from bargain to high end...

Have a look in here:

Mavic XA & Crossmax wheels on discount at CRC and Wiggle.   I just bought some boost crossmax, you'll probably want the XA's.

I'm in the same market but looking more at the £3-400 range... No experience but my top contenders so far are the Hunt Trailwide (mentioned above) or Nukeproof Horizon.

That actionsports.de looks good...

Hope pro 4 and whatever rim you want. Ex511 or stans flow would be the logical choice. I just got Xm481 rims on pro 4 hubs for £430. Burlier than the 511 rims but I'm a big unit

Thread resurrection.....thanks for the suggestions so far.

The Hunt wheels look good value.  Predictably, I want the weight of the XC, with the rim width of the trail!  For mostly non- technical  XC/trail riding would I be missing out by using a 25mm rather than 30mm rim?  I’ve got a large stock of mostly 2.35 tyres to use up, so won’t be going much wider than that in the near future.

Something like the Just Riding Along Carbon Traildog seems to offer both (29mm, 1650g).  Twice as much as the Hunts (£750), and more than I was originally considering, but still seems cheap for carbon.  Anyone got experience of these?

I'd be interested in the feedback on these as well, I'm in similar position to the OP.  My default option would be a set of Arch EX built by JRA, but ideally want 30mm internal and sub 1800g.

I went with Flows (MK3 I think the new ones anyway) on Hope pro 4’s 110 front 148 rear. From UBUK  under £500. I looked at Carbons but they were all double the price for anything with a good warranty (this was before the latest incarnation of lifetime crash replacements).  But If I go carbon it will be with Ridge or 6th element anyvthey are a lot more than the alu set up I have now.

Other way around, isn't it? EX511 very much burlier tham XM481

Ive had flow mk3 wheels ( with the stans hubs) and they have been very good. I wouldnt hesitate to buy them again. If it was for more xc / trail style riding id buy the arch wheels instead.

This would be my choice for the use described in the OP, and it'd be a very easy choice at that price.

And yeah, the 481s are less burly than the ex511s.
