Probably a stupid question but thinking of buying a 700c alfine wheel of ebay for my swift. The guy says it's on a alex rim and will take 29er tyre and everyhing seems to suggest they will but not 100%. Any tips?

The rim is the same diameter, the width will dictate what sized MTB tyre you can fit

Like steve_b77 says will depend on the width. I bought an Alfine on eBay with an Alex rim and it was quite a narrow rim, wouldn't have been happy putting an MTB tyre on it. Not a problem for me as I just wanted the hub

The ETRTO has a rough guide to give you an idea of appropriate tyre and rim combinations.

Assuming it's a "true" 2.4" tyre (ie. contintental size not maxxis), you'll want at least a 19mm internal rim width. Not to say that you couldn't fit a tyre that big to a smaller rim, but you're running an increased risk of rolling it off, etc.

Yeah i wouldn't go under 19mm for sure, i find 2.25s with thinner sidewalls get squirmy on my 717s at under ~30-35psi. Then again 2.3 Purgatory Controll seem fine at 30 so it does depend on the tyre somewhat.

I run 2.4 Ralphs on a Mavic 19mm rim & have no problems. Back on 26" wheels, I ran 2.35's on a 17mm rim, squirmed a bit but was rideable.

I'm running a Chunky Monkey 2.4 front and Conti Rubber Queen 2.2 on Halo AeroWarrior rims , no trouble so far
