I don't think you can sqeeze 1.75 tyres onto 700c rims?
But can you go down to say 35/42mm CX tyres on dedicated 29er rims?

I used a 2.1 Schwalbe Albert on an open pro rim (made for a round profile but no major concerns) so 1.75's should be fine.

Can't see there would be much problem running my Houfalise CX tyres (32c?) on the DT 29er rim either - though I have not tried that way round.

I've managed to fit 2.4 inch big apples onto some touring bike rims. I think the minimum they will accept is a 28mm tyre.

i have got bontrager 1.8 29er tyres onto my shimano r550 road wheels. They dont roll too badly although i wouldnt want to run them too soft. I think they equate to about 46 or 48c tyres.

Made my cross bike feel like a monster truck - in a good way.

A lot of mythology about tyre/rom compatability out there.

I've put a 2.4" tyre on a 80mm rim, it was rideable but maybe not clever for certain riding.

Also toured off road with a 2.5" on a 231cd.

I've used 28c tyres on my 29er Arch rims, but they are an absolute ******** to get on & off, so much so that I'm building up some dedicated road wheels instead.
