As the title really 😀

My fattie is currently in for some upgrades and I want to ditch the 26 and go 29 semi fat. Carbon and ali both on the table. What’s good, what’s not? Gina be for an 85 kg bloke plus bikepacking gear fairly frequently.

Cheers

I've been happy with my Easton ARC45 rims, picked them up super cheap from CRC, not sure if there's any left as was a while ago.

I've got Stans Hugos, had them for a couple of years now. I run low pressures, the rear looks a bit like a 50p piece, plenty of dings, but it still holds air fine and is still true.

Edit: and I'm about 115kg, so they are proving robust (on 197 rear, 150 front)

i have some arc 40s for my mukluk. bought them with hope pro2 (i think) hubs. 170mm rear and 135mm front. no probs so far. run with chupacabra front and fat-b-nimble on the rear.

bought the wheelset from someone off here so cant advise on where to get them now but they are good.

I’ve got a Dually and a Halo Vapour 50. No complaints about either. The Vapours are good value as a wheel set and I’ve heard good things about the hubs.

The original 29+ rims are still good.
Rabbit Holes on my Krampus are still straight and undented after 5 years of abuse.
Work well tubeless too.

+1 for the Krampus/Rabbit Hole combo.

Mine are still straight and true despite my somewhat agricultural riding style.

Ridden hard bonty line pro 40s for 2 years now with 29x3 tyres. Still in great condition, just a couple of marks.

I have had two sets of Nextie carbon rims and both have been great. I would choose them again for a carbon rim.

ETA to clarify, I still have them and they are still going great. I caught a stick in a spoke on my Alligator 27.5+ set and the spoke got severely bent just by the nipple, but the spokehole in the rim was fine, I would have expected some deformation on an ali rim there.

Hugo's are ok - I dinged one to the point i wouldn't hold air, though.

Look at Light Bicycle if you want something a bit more carbony and are happy to import.

I've just ordered some of the Lightbicycle 50mm ones. Should be here in a couple of weeks.

Yeah, I think if I ever knacker my ARC45s I'll be looking at some light bicycle ones, got them on my non-niche bike and they've been great to date.

Arc 45 are cheep (£30) on crc, but 28h only. Think I think the OP will struggle to get 28h fattie hubs, but anyone else reading who's on "normal" spacing could get plussed up for not much with some novatec's or something.

Another vote for Nextie carbon rims here. They build into a pretty damn light wheelset - circa 1.7kg.

Are building them yourselves or buying them pre-built?

Sorry - missed the. 29+ bit! I ended up getting an LB Carbon rim as I couldn’t get a 29” XM551.
