I have been running my Surly Wednesday with 29+ wheels shod with Vittoria Bombolini this summer and this has proved really good for bikepacking and evening rides from home which involve some tarmac. With wet stuff coming down recently I am expecting the Bombolinis to not be at their best on wet roots and rocks. I already have a Maxxis Dhf for the front and am looking for something for the rear. Short list is a Dhr, High Roller, Rekon or Nobby Nic. Has anyone got any suggetions or experience. I know this is a bit niche. Of course when proper winter mud and muck arrive the fat wheels will go back on and everything will be as God intended. Thanks in advance.

I have 27.5 plus wheels with minions on my Whippet.
Previously I had always thought mud tyres needed to be sub 2 inch but these tyres have proved me wrong.
Absolute grip everywhere.
Edit ,my fatbike is a deathtrap in Surrey mud.

I like a dhr 29x3.0 personally all I would say is shell out extra for the 3c maxx terra version it is a far better tire.

A rekon 2.8 is also a good shout but I've only ever used this because the dhr wouldn't quite fit.

Dhr cant go wrong.

Rekon + is surprisingly capable in a wide range of conditions. It’s my usual go to rear tyre for winter, along with a DHR on the front. Last winter I couldn’t be arsed changing my summer Ikon+ and it was also excellent in everything apart from deeper mud. Really good in hard frosty conditions.
Can’t imagine how draggy a DHR on the rear would feel. I remember an article on here a few years back singing the praises of DHR on the front and DHF on the rear.

Don’t see the point of the High Roller in today’s line up. Not as grippy as. DHR but not as fast as a Rekon.

How much + do you want - I never really got on with anything more than 2.6, after that I put the fat wheels back on as they were so much better in every way....

Anyway Vittoria do the martello in 29x2.6?

XR4 might be worth a try. Admittedly I stick one in the front in the winter, but not quite as chunky as a DHF.
