36/24 upfront with 11/34 out back. Also running a bash ring and a blackspire stinger with no dropped chain in over 2 years

Combo I liked most was 28/40 with 11-34.

On one of my bikes I use 26/38 with an e13 bash and 11-34 cassette. This was originally on my Enduro, now I've moved it to a different bike (XC hardtail) I think 26/40 or 26/42 would be a better bet. If I went 2x10 rather than 2x9, I would definitely go 28/42 if I was using it for my local (flattish) XC terrain.

Mostly Lakes riding, I ran 22/32 with 11-32. Was good for setting off on steep stuff, never felt I was spinning like a mad man. Moved to 10 speed, 24/32 with 11-36, so far I like it, nice to have the extra gear at the end of the day with tired legs.

Hope bash guard no chain guide.
