Is this what they call semi-plus and the ideal compromise size for trail riding? Thinking of getting a hardtail that can fit this size.
Agreed. Although I would err towards 2.7.
Not a great deal of choice for hardtail frames that will accept this unless you go for 29+.
Having said that the new Karate Monkey will take a fattish rear.
I’ve got a 29x2.6 Nobby Nic on the back of my Sherpa and love it, with a 29x3 Dirt Wizard on the front, the bike is a bit of a monster. Only trouble is the B.B. is getting a bit high so might go to a 650b+ on the back.
No.
The perfect tyre for hardtail trail riding is 26" x 2.2-2.4 depending on conditions/rider weight.
Why compromise?
Minion 2.5 comes up to 2.6 on my i29 rims and is pretty big volume as well as having a footprint like a fat lady's thigh. I like it, but I think a lot of people wouldn't tbh- I run it at fairly low pressure which makes it a wee bit pingy sometimes and it's got a bit of smear in hard corners. And run hard I don't think it'd really work at all. But it's not like Plus (which imo is basically crap), it's just a big tyre, it rides like a tyre. Works for me.
Depends on the tyre too obviously, I think with soft sidewalls it'd be pretty ugly but the minion has some beef to it. But fat and fast would be interesting to try- specialized, make me a Captain Grid 2.6...
2.6 was great on the back of the tandem but got a 2.8 Terrene Mcfly sat on my garage floor waiting to be fitted but we've been away for the last two weeks, looks like it should be good and will report back with how it goes.
