[Closed] 28T for SLX?

My weekend ride in the Clwyds confirmed my initial suspicions that the gearing on my Anthem is way too high for me.
I can buy a 30T to replace the 32, but really want something even lower than that. I generally really enjoy cycling up hills so the old "you'd be quicker walking" spiel isn't really relevant for me. Clearly the MTFU/Get fitter epiphet might more relevant but TBH I do get fairly fit occasionally and still like to spin low gears.

I can't see any 28T rings advertised for SLX, and am guessing this is because the BCD doesn't allow it....
What ghastly mods do I need to do to fit 28T to an SLX 1by?

If only there was a way of having a choice of chainrings that could be permanently mounted and you could select between them as required. Some sort of handlebar-mounted device for controlling it would be useful too - just to stop you having to get off the bike.

You’d have to fit it in the granny ring position, which is what I’ve done on my Liteville 301.

If it has a fixed single ring spider then probably nothing without a new chainset. In which case either a double Shimano with the small ring in the inner position or another brand that fits your BB and has a direct mount ring... Race Face maybe?

SRAM Cranks do Direct Mounts too

Who cares, there are plenty of cranks which can take a smaller range of rings. Simply delivers without loads of duplication.

Only way it's doable is by fitting some direct mount cranks ala raceface cinch or sram direct mount.... Or new xtr😉
You can go as low as 26 should you wish then.

They do but I thought RaceFace could use a Shimano BB so one less thing to change but could be cheaper to go with SRAM and get a GXP BB to fit.

Don't think you can mate, unless you spend a load for one to go in the granny position... And then it's sub-optimal chainline & possibly less secure.

I got a race face aeffect chainset instead.

Ok. So this race face effect chainset. Sounds suspiciously like what have on my other bike....

It works fine, in my experience, with an Absolute Black 28T on XT cranks. If anything, the chainline is better where it counts most (ie in the lowest gears) and you can always play about with spacers.
Why would it be less secure, btw?

So when y'all are talking granny position. Is this on a 1by chainset??
I thought they only had one position.

What cassette have you got on the bike?
If it’s an 11-42 you could change it 11-46.
Otherwise swapping to 2x11 may be better for you.

Can't you fit a 11-50 cassette. One of the Sunrace ones?

This does put me off buying a new bike. It should be easy to come up with a crank that you can mount wide range of single chain rings too. But no some one says 30x46 is the lowest with out spending money on new cranks

Sounds like a terrible idea tbh compared to my 10-50 cassette. More weight, more complexity, more cost, more to go wrong, more handlebar controls particularly as it probably couldn't go under the bars because of the dropper remote. It would probably be less instinctive to use too.

I made one years ago, eventually just put a 30 front 36 cassette set up on.

well you can with a direct mount crank so best to choose something with one of those. RaceFace do SRAM rings that go down to 26T for example:
https://www.raceface.com/products/details/dm-narrow-wide-sram-compatible-single-ring

but yes, it's a bit of a PITA if you have Shimano. They've been really half-arsed about 1x drivetrains.

I've got a 26t NW chaingring in the granny position, and nothing in the regular position. That's on a 104BCD XT chainset.

It works great, no problems with chainline, I very rarely find myself spinning out since that bike tends to only go places that are very steep either up or down.

11-42t at the back.

You need one of these (North Shore Billet 28t narrow wide for M8000 cranks):

I’ve been running them for three years, they’re great.

Yes, exactly this, except I’ve 28T and 11-46. I don’t ride much flat stuff either, so it works fine for me.

Does that NS billet Jobbie go in the middle, or granny ring position?

If it's the middle, how does it manage to fit when others can't?

That NS ring is for the latest dedicated 1x from Shimano with 96BCD.

The North Shore Billet 28t mounts to the granny ring holes. On the M8000 1x cranks the granny ring holes are there so it’s no problem (I assume SLX M7000 cranks are the same, but I don’t know for certain).

Thanks for this- I had ordered new shifter, derailleur and 11-46 cassette for my new build for my lad, but can now send all that back as the M8000 XT crank arms I got half price from Tiso’s have the granny ring holes, so I’ve ordered a 28t from shorelines as linked above and will re use his current 10 speed 11-42 stuff- saved me a fortune! (Had to buy new cranks anyway as his old ones are square taper and wouldn’t work with the new press fit frame). Wouldn’t have known about that without this thread.

So the NS 28t mounts on the small ring holes but does that still give the same chainline (around 50mm) ? Can the original hole be retained ? I have a x1 XT M8000 chainset.

The (suggested above) 28t ring arrived today, it’s offset outboard so gives same (or very similar) chain line to the 96mm bcd holes. Very pleased!
