Dropped my chain at speed yesterday and it ended up in my spokes, the mech and hanger are done too.
I've been riding some 32H Pro2 evos with M502s for a couple of years and barely give them a thought. The hubs came with a used bike I bought 4 years ago and are looking pretty tired after yesterday.
It's cheaper to buy a set of XM481/Pro 4's built than to get the bits and do it myself, but a couple of builders I have spoken with have 28H builds in stock, one is saying they will be fine the other is more cautious I am unsure if they are going to be strong enough to just fit and forget like my current wheels given my 90KG kitted weight?
Mainly ride flinty trails in Kent, Peaslake and Redlands but do some trips to bike parks and rockier trails too. I do some jumps and drops but nothing huge.
Will I die?
I've always avoided 28h builds purely from a rim availability point of view. If you want to change rims in the future, you're pretty much sure to be able to get 32h rims, where as 28h are much rarer.
I was about to say yes, you will die.... then I realised that I have just bought 24 spoke Mavic wheels and I weigh 95Kg fully loaded. I'll die first
DT’s complete wheels using that rim are 28H, and whenever I’ve looked for DT rim availability, 28H are generally easier to source than 32H.
I wouldn’t worry about it.
Me and my bike are well north of 125 kg (probably closer to 135 kg if I’m being honest with myself) these days and I've been running a set set of 28H wheels that I built a couple of years ago without any trouble. They aren’t quite the same as your build, as they use straight pull DT swiss 350 hubs with the XM481 rims, but I’ve not had to touch them even after trips to the local jump park.
