Hi all,
Yes I know. A "what tyre?" thread.
I'm looking for an XC tyre, but not a race day only no tread kind of thing. I have Crossmark's at the moment, and I find the grip ok, but they are too floppy for running low pressure tubeless. They are also knackared.
Crossmark 2 is the obvious thing that springs to mind, but anything else similar that's worth trying?
I live and ride mostly in Bristol.
I found Crossmarks a bit crap, for a tyre thats supposed to be fast, they are really slow. Can't fault the grip for an XC tyre though - performed much better than expected in that regard.
If looking at Maxxis i'd look at the Ardent race over the Crossmark2 as the former comes in 3C compound and a better casing.
I find Conti X-king Protection a really versatile tyre that is super fast and has acceptable grip in a fairly wide range of conditions.
Schwalbe rocket rons with the sidewall protection?
Another suggestion for the Ardent Race - have a look at the Ikon too... Currently have an Ikon on the back.

I like these in Black Chilli a lot, but they are a nightmare to set-up tubeless (poreous (sp?) sidewalls) and the sidewalls can be a little fragile. Saying that, they're a very quick and comfortable XC tyre when riding well. I was amazed at their performance on the last Dyfi enduro I rode a few years back.
Always got on well with Maxxis Aspens in 26".
Running Conti X-Kings in 650b at the mo, which are OK, but grip goes quickly once they start to wear. Will probably try 650b Aspens next...
I really don't like Rocket Rons. I haven't found they do anything particularly well.
I was taking a look at ardent race, but they seem a lot pricier than a crossmark 2. (£45 v £32).
At the moment, I've got a Hans Dampf on the front, and a worn out cross mark on the rear.
Hans Dampf is really for when it gets wetter.
Any love for the Bonty tyres? Xr3 or XR2?
Hutchinsons?
Taipan or Python?
Not tried one myself, but rarely seen anyone have anything bad to say about XR2.

Ardent race and Ikon's are good in the dry, but now the weather is turning, I would be looking for something which can deal with mud, keen to try the maxxis forecaster on the front (leaving the ardent race on the back).
Currently running a Crossmark II on the back and HR II up front and it seems like an great combo, fast rolling with loads of grip on the front and just enough slide on the rear to be fun and fast but not scary. If weights on Maxxis' site are to be believed though a Minion DHR II and Ardent race would be the best part of 150g lighter so possibly worth a look at those too.
