Hi guys,
i need a dropper post for my KTM and the id of the seat tube is 27.2. Unfortunately my options seem to be very limited. The Ks Lev seems to be hard to locate and the Thompson is very expensive !!!!! Any other suggestions.

Used Gravity Dropper probably. Though the parts availability isn't as good as it was... Bike-discount I think had the KS one for about £110? Worth it, over the slightly cheaper no-names, you've got to be able to rely on some aftersales for these.

The Thompson one [i]is[/i] very nice.

I've also used an X-Fusion, not as polished as a Thompson or a Reverb, but does the job. I had one of the 1st gen ones, it ran fine for two years through horrible conditions, and as far as I know it's still working.

I see there's a 125mm Thomson now, that'll be worth a look in a couple of years once the paying beta testers are done

I have the KS Lev and Gravity dropper on two bikes. The GD is a very good functioning piece of kit - lots said about them already. The 27.2 KS lev seems good so far. It is heavy but it has a nice simple lever and a smooth action. I like it probably more than the GD.

I love my gravity dropper with it's lovely concertina rubber boot. I like to cycle past newbs and press the lever to have it thump up with a good solid thwack to show how awesomez aye is.

I've got a Lev Integra 272 with a Southpaw level on the Epic. It works. Which seems to be more than you can say for a lot of droppers. Quality etc appear to be on par with the Thomson I had on the Orange.

Bought directly from Stif, so at least if there are any problems I'm dealing direct with the importer.

Ben, I have an S Works Epic too. Have been considering the 272 Lev. There seem to be two versions; possibly a newer one without the red logo on the side. Anyway, is it any good?

Mrs Wachowchow has a 27.2 X Fusion dropper in her old 5 Spot. It doesn't get a huge amount of use as she's up the duff again but its been flawless in the use it has had.

I have an old 27.2 Gravity Dropper for sale. It's needs a bit of love, but this is not difficult and they are very reliable.

Thanks for the input lads. I only have experience of the reverb and the Spesh command that kicks me in the b####x every now and again. My LBS mentioned the x-fusion and said they were good but i know nothing of them. I would be wary of warranty issues regarding buying in DE but if it was good value i vuess it would beworth the risk.

I had a KS on my [i]can't-believe_i_sold-my-[/i]Soul, was reliable and trouble free - only 100mm drop, but did the job well.

Thomson 27.2mm I've got is lovely. No issues.

I have a KS Cruxi on another bike (the only other dropper I can compare it to) and the Thomson is much nicer.

I don't think you'll regret it.

I think it's hard to find many posts which are UK-proof and reliable, so serviceable is the next best thing, which case the gravity dropper is one to go for.

The Thomson is a very lovely thing, but experience suggests the price premium does not mean it will keep going.

i ended up buying an RSP Plummet as it was cheap...cost me £55 from Tredz
its been faultless in its performance
the Plummet is now discontinued but its identical to the Zoom Satori Sorata Pro and similar to the T-Mars dropper

Agree with that much. My RSP Plummet imploded pretty quickly and only worked intermittently before that.

I just swapped my 27.2 Xfusion HiLo for a Thomson as I couldn't get on with only having 100mm drop and it never worked that well, I also have a Reverb and Command Post on other bikes, I've only had one ride on the Thomson so far but I have to say it is the nicest of them all.

Chosen over the Thompson because of the internal cable routing. In fact even if I was going for the external,y routed one, I'd still chose the KS as the cable enters at the top of the static part of the post and thus doesn't move in use, unlit the Thompson that enters at the head.

Had sufficient bits in the parts bag that came with the bike to run it properly inside and out the right hand port at the top of the down tube.

Any good? Well hard to know at this stage. My Epic is a race bike so doesn't get used a vast amount, but the post goes up and down smoothly. There is the tiniest amount of play in the shaft but you don't notice it in use. I'll be keeping an eye on it.

The other 272 option is the new Specialized Command post which comes in a 50mm drop but I couldn't find one anywhere.

Ben... I've been looking at the Command post XCP but there is conflicting intel on the actual drop. On the Specialized site it's 30mm but on some retailers it's 50mm. 30mm for £300 is, er, expensive.

I have an x-fusion 27.2 post and it is fine. Not as nice as my KS Lev or my IRCC Command Post - but still, very good. Got it used and it blew its oil everywhere when I first went to install, but since then it had a rebuild and has been flawless.

Spesh command posts only come in 4"+ travel in 30 and 31 apparently.....

30mm for £300 is, er, expensive.

I think it is 35mm, with the SRL lever.

I have one, it is excellent for an XC or light trail bike as a 35mm drop is all you need to be able to clear the saddle easily (maybe unless you wear ill-fitting baggies with liners that hook up on the seat).

Had a gravity dropper with an intermediate drop position before and that was more of a hassle as finding the intermediate position was a lot slower than just dropper to full drop with the XCP, which is very quick with the excellent SRL lever.

There are two variants of the Specialised XCP post, a 350mm post with 35mm travel, and a 400mm post with 50mm travel. Both are substantially lighter (saving 100g is a lot in weenie XC land) than other brands as the static part of the post is carbon, and they're aim squarely at XC racers as TurnerGuy pointed out.

or are more useful, as I said, because you can get to the 35mm drop position faster than messing around with the intermediate position on the GD.

No idea why you'd want to do that though? Up for sitting, down for not sitting. Hardly anyone ever uses intermediate positions.

With the XCP I can have the post at absolute full height for climbing, etc, and then to the 35mm drop position for riding through singletrack, etc whilst still pedalling, otherwise I have to stand for the whole of the singletrack, which I may not want to. especially if it not all downhill.

To do the same thing on the multi-position GD meant having to feather the post so it dropped into the intermediate position.

Obviously people do ride like this otherwise there would be no demand for posts with intermediate drops.

The XCP is for people that don't want a fuller drop and appreciate the speed at which you can get between the positions.

I drop my post an inch or so quite a bit, couldn't live without the full 125mm+ drop though.

I do, all the time. I set my posts road-bike high for pedalling efficiency on smooth stuff, drop it just a smidge for pedally singletrack or techy climbs so I can move about a bit more easily but still pedal seated. I drop it more but not all the way for long downs, so I can sit and rest if needs be (I'm obviously not as fit as you) without my knees being up round my ears, and then only use the full travel if I'm going over something that really gives me the heebie jeebies like a big drop or something.

Personally I can't understand how anyone could put up with one of those fixed-position droppers, it'd drive me nuts being stuck with only two or three settings, but each to their own.

Yep, I just gave you the results of my personal survey 😉 Most posts these days have infinite adjustment and yet how often do you ever see them anywhere but up or down? (or in that "one inch from the bottom" that you get when you mess up). It's clear that overwhelmingly people want the long drop more than they care about a short drop.

Not to say some folks don't have a use for it but the sacrifice of function is big and the benefit is small.

There's lots of demand for things that end up unused. How many bikes have lockouts that are never used, state of the art dampers with extra dials that are never touched? I got a multi-drop gravity dropper because I thought it sounded useful, turned out not to be but I still bought it.

I use intermediate positions all the time. A drop of 1" - 1.5" is great for twisty singletrack.

I use a variety too. Mostly the wrong ones for the situation. Usually involves wondering why I'm getting knackered climbing back up after a descent before realising the post has stopped about an inch from the top.

Three positions is perfect for me. All the way up for climbs, all the way down for Gnaar and 30mm down for general riding/singletrack. Its very easy to find the mid position on my Command Post I can see it might be less popular if it was in any way a faff to find the right spot, such as with an infinite adjust post.

But if that was the only two options then a dropper post wouldn't be as useful IMO. If you have your post set for a good climbing position when fully up then it'd be too high for singletrack riding so you drop it and its too low to sit on, hence the need for a mid position

I have an rsp dropper. It's taught me that I never want to ride a bike without a dropper again, it's also taught me never to buy a shite one again.

The main bushing wobbles nearly a mm in the housing, which means the saddle has a solid 5mm forward and backward play. a bunch of rotational play. I think the alu housing is stretching under use, loosening up around the bushing. I'm waiting for it to fail spectacularly.

Have just ordered a KS E Ten for my new Highball 😀
Seems to be best mix of price & reliability wanted external routing too so can swap between posts, (have a USE vybe suspension post and carbon post too.)

I had the E-ten R on my old Kona, the post itself was bullet proof. However the actuator arm and pin always bunged up with crap meaning it would drop mid ride when muddy. A real problem in the UK. Easy enough to fix but in my opinion needs some kind of mudguard for reliable operation.
