Hi folks.
After some advice for a mates bike.
He's got a trek hardtail with the +tyres that need replacing. At the moment he has maxis reckon 27.5 x2.8 fitted.
I didn't have a proper look but think they have inner tubes at the moment and he wants to go tubeless or slime tubes.
Any decent priced tyre replacements and links please?
If he wants to run tubeless what width tape would I need to fit?
Thanks for any help. 👍
Rekon 275 x 2.8 tyres are a similar size edge to edge as a lot of 2.6 tyres... including most other Maxxis 2.6 tyres.
Ribble have DHF 275 x 2.6 OEM tyres going cheap... a pair of those would do the job, and they run tubeless well.
Tape depends on the rim.

Depends on the rim internal width, a 3-5mm wider than the internal width.
Banana Industries have a bunch of flavours in 2.6 for not very much.

Duck tape fitted with a double run around each rim. Easy to tear off to the correct width. Cheap.
27.5x2.8" Nobby Nic's often come up in sales pretty cheap in various flavours of compound etc. too.

No no no no no no NO!!! Just NO!!!
Duck/Duct/Gorilla/Gaffer tape or whatever you want to call it is porous... It absorbs sealant over time... Most sealants are caustic... I have seen way too many expensive aluminium rims fail because of corrosion from inside out because of someone skimping another £5-10 on some better tubeless tape, and when they do fail, it can be pretty catastrophic!
OK so ENVE used to recommend Gorilla tape for rim tape for their rims I hear you say... But ENVE rims are carbon, no aluminium!
DON'T DO IT!!! 🤬
Enve deserved a class action law suit for that with Gorilla, it does seal well, it's just the worst job in the world getting the residue off.
Michelin had a really good range at one point and you can still find most of them pretty cheaply if you shop around, as ever with Michelin it was almost impossible to understand which was which from the descriptions though. I think I had a Force (fast) and a Wild Enduro (which was super slow but super grippy) but honestly I just went and tried to figure it out and I came away knowing less than I did before. I think they've rebranded everything since then too, just to keep it fun.
I've got some schwable rocket rons in 27.5 x 2.8 and also continental cross kings for sale. Not much use
Not quite what you asked but banana Industries have a few 2.6 width options at discount prices.

@ shorty, can you send me pics info please and I'll pass it on to him cheers
Thanks for links.
Am I right in thinking the performance grade schwalbe tyres isn't good? It used to be a harder rubber & would give up grip on wet roads easily.
Is that still the same?
The above was for @shorty
Thanks also for the Ribble & Banana links, I've forwarded them on 👍
Rekon 2.8 runs tubeless fine (got it set up on the back of my RocketMAX right now). I use Muc-Off rim tape.
WTB Ranger 2.8 also works well for me tubeless as a rear tyre. The 2.8 WTB Vigilante is a great front tyre too if you can find any left in stock anywhere.
Banana have Pirelli 2.6s and they are massive. My Levo came with Spesh 2.6 in the back and the Pirellis have barely a fag paper of space, so much so I've had to take it off!
Changed my WTB Trailblazer 2.8 for Vittoria Mezcal 2.6 recently, pretty much the same size on the same rims & very easy to set up both tubeless & straight*
* Trailblazers always had a bit of a wobble on them

Eh - what about Shimano & Mavics tubeless rims that don't require taping? I've seen some aluminium motorcycle rims corroded from the inside but my Shimano & Mavic rims all seem fine - always used stans sealant on them but they're getting fairly long in the tooth now.

I've been using it for years and find it holds as well as any 'proper' tape.

Have you? Really? I suppose it could be argued that one is too many but what is too many too you? How did you ascertain it was the result of lower quality tape? My rims have all been fine so find it surprising that you have experienced such different results.
DON'T DO IT!!!

Real life results means I'll carry on doing it, thanks. Everyone is free to choose based on evidence presented.

The Sealant doesn't get inside the rim then. Not that I understand this claim anyway.
Is it a Roscoe by any chance? I used to have one of those!
Thanks for the help folks. He's gone for the pair of E wild tyres.
How much Stans should I put in ease of these tyres?
Cheers.
