I've got most of the parts either ready, or on their way for my first 27.5 bike for a while (need to sell some 29er bits off).

The one thing I'm missing is wheels. Ideally, cheaper the better at the moment!

I've found a set of DT Swiss M1900 30 wheels for £220 brand new and Also looked at the Mavic XA 27,5 Boost Wheelsets for around the same price.

I might be able to stretch to some Hunt wheels at £350, but it depends on what I sell on from stripping the RC529.

Any opinions on those choices, or more suggestions? I want them to be at least or around 30mm ID width though. It'd be great if I could use my SC Reserve 27, but they're 29ers 🙁

I've got a set of Roval 29mm internal for sale...
Think they are still in the Classifieds. Price is negotiable!

Thanks piesoup, I'll keep it in mind. I can't see them on the classifieds, but I used to have a set that I ended up binning due the the rims easily dinging and the low spoke count wasn't ideal for my "heft" 🙂

Should have put that I'm about 15st 5lbs of pure man hehe!

That is cheap!

Says in the description that they're for cross country/marathon type riding. I do wonder how strong they'd be through rock gardens or steep, rooty stuff?

Edit* I think the description on those might be wrong. They come up as 29ers on other sites (with 27.5mm width).

These were posted a while ago as a PSA, and then again as back in stock. Not sure if these would suit what you want?

I've had some of these for nearly 3 years and they have held up well.

Cheers gnusmas, they look good for the price. Might be a bit too wide though and I forgot to mention that I'd need an XD freehub 🙂

Seems there's plenty about though. It's frustrating that I seem to have spares and parts to build the bike, apart from wheels which are all 29ers lol.

The Ghost, they look good for the money! Shimano freehub though 🙁 Do you know what hubs they are out of interest?

Take a look at Halo's mate. I have 2 sets, one on my enduro bike and another on my trail hardtail. There absolutely solid and the hubs are very reliable. Also their a UK company, but that's just my preference.

These are what I have on my trail hardtail and can take a beating.

No idea what hubs are on the ridewill wheels, but it was very easy to change the bearings. The degree of movement is pretty high. There is slightly more rotation before engagement than on my Hope pro4 wheels.

What bike are you switching your RC529 for? I'm on a RC627 and it is the best thing since red M&Ms.

Ah nice one Joe, I'd forgotten about Halo!

I've bought an Intense Spider 275c to build up. The RC529 is great (Was at Hamsterley with it yesterday), but I've come to the conclusion that hardtails just aren't for me.

Saying that, if there aren't too many rocks or big roots, it's one of the best bikes I've had so far!

@johnw1984 well you've purchased a great bike. I demoed a Spider, 6 months ago and loved it. Such a fast machine!
Good luck with the build.

Stay away from the Fulcrums- they might be decent wheels but they're the shittest company I've ever dealt with for spares. On the rare occasion something was actually available it was all mentally expensive or otherwise hassly- like, the spokes for my red zones were only available in packs of 8, for £40-ish. A wee internal rear hub part failed and was totally unavailable even through their warranty people. And they're awful to deal with too. Just not worth it

I've been quite tempted by the Decathlon wheelsets- £250 and come with tyres and even a casseete. Good rims on basic hubs, seems to be the verdict

Cheers Northwind. To be honest I've only ever had 2 sets of Fulcrum (one oem set on wife's Cube and a set of road wheels), and can't say we had them long enough to experience spares issues.

Ah yes, forgot about Superstar too. I've mananged to get £250ish together now (room for a bit of budget creep). Planning on running 2.3-2.4 Maxxis tyres at the moment.

Ideally, I was looking at 30mm inner width rims, but would 35mm be too extreme?
https://www.pinkbike.com/news/rim-widths-comparison-test-mountain-bike.html

Looking at this, I'd say 35mm would be ok and these are in stock.

Going to have a look at Superstar builds now.

Going to go for the XX27 rims on Novatec hubs from Superstar for £100. Close enough to 30mm and can't argue for that price. I know a few people have had bad experiences, but fingers crossed, They've been good with me so far.

Cheap enough to be temporary till I can get some nicer wheels, then they'll do for spares.

Great buy at that price, decent wheels and better than a lot of cheap options. Had a couple of pairs of the 25mm ones myself.

The Mavics were the standout deal, but narrower at 25mm and not for going full enduro. The Superstars will ding up a bit but at that price you won'[t care.

@chakaping My thoughts exactly regarding the dings 🙂

If I end up getting my money's worth out of the rims, I'll buy a better wheelset further down the line and finally learn how to build wheels by reusing the Novatec hubs and new rims!

Do the Halo Vapour 35's take a 3" tyre? They seem like the standout budget choice but I'm concerned that I might be pushing it to get a 3" on and i30 rim.
