I have been after some light-ish, road-ish bike that would take fat tyres. The intended use is light touring on bad surface roads, some dirt road riding (a network of forest logging roads here, some in bad state.
I probably should just stick to what's available but I got this idea in my head that a road bike with 2 in slicks would be rad. I already have a cross check that is set up currently as single speed town bike but when it was in touring mode I thought that with big wheels and tyres it was a bit sluggish. Hence the 26 in wheels idea.
Unfortunately nothing like this exists but I thought that cotic x with its relatively high bb (55mm bb drop)could work nicely when used with 559 wheels and disc brakes. The result would be close to what I am after, a road bike with low bb and cush tyres.
So, my questions iare: has anyone tried? Or could possibly some cotic x owner estimate whether 559-50 tyre would fit between chainstays? Am I dumb?

Thanks,
Marcin

not a cotic owner but the roadrat has the same bb drop and they claim that is suited to either size. I run 40-559 slicks (rubino pro) on my commuter and love them. they would be well within the the range you would expect a cyclocross to take and they feel fat to me. not as comfy or as grippy as the previous conti sport contact 33-559, but tougher...

I will be selling my 58cm Cotic X frame and fork in the near future, I can check if a 26" fits if you want?

Please do, if that's not much trouble, thank you. I'll keep an eye for the advert.

Good point, thanks. It may not be such a dumb idea after all. Some Rivendell bikes designed for 26 in wheels have the same bb drop.

Thanks,

Marcin

X's have a fairly small tyre clearance in 622. this might improve with 559 but not convinced that there would be enough.

Measured the X last night, fitted a pair of 26" wheels (no tyres) and measured the internal clearance of the frame at the outer edge of the rim. So between the rear chain stays its 53mm, 77mm between seat stays, and between the fork blades its 55mm.
The frame is an orange 58cm with carbon forks and looking for £250 + postage.

Thanks for the measurements. Seems like you are not really gaining any clearance by going to smaller wheels.

My roadrat rode horribly with 26" wheels. 265mm BB height meant it was pedal-strike-tastic
