So I'm reading this month's issue of outdoor fitness and saw that it had an article on enduro racing. Dan Atherton is being interviewed and I saw that he says "the gt force runs 650b wheels. They're slightly bigger than 26" wheels which puncture more easily "...

Can anyone explain this?

Is he referring to the lower angle of attack as the larger wheel rolls over jagged rocks and stuff?

He could be saying 650b puncture more easily, depends how you read it!?

yeh, I'd guess snakebites are a bit less likely with bigger wheels

Sounds like a rider sponsored by a bike company to me. 😉

Edit: igm beat me to it.

The only possible difference can be contact area and therefore PSI of the contact patch

Its going to be marginal , if at all in the real world, though it is probably measurable

Just wait 'til he tries a 29er.

he rides 700c at our club time trials, not seem him puncture there.
But I have seen him smile. Smiling at a TT now that is odd.

It clearly wasn't Dan, or any of the Athertons, being interviewed. That quote doesn't contain at least 4 instances of the phrase 'y'know' y'know?

Claiming more puncture resistance when you are sponsored by Continental has to be the ultimate contradiction in terms! Maybe he doesn't count ripped tyres as punctures.

Well if they make the trails come alive surely they must do something for the tubes and / or sealant too?

It would seem obvious to me that all other factors being the same larger wheels will be more pinch flat resistant

But whether its by enough to notice i don't know

Only if you're using proper Enduro specific sealant.

That is bollocks! What does make a difference is decent tyres or tyre systems I can't wait for dual chamber system and sub 20psi.
