Trying to find some decent 26" tyres for my new old 2009 Genesis IO ID after a weekend of slip sliding around the Dales on an old Conti Mountin King front and getting no traction from a Maxxis Aspen on the back:)
The original Rims are in mint condition, they're Alex XD-Lite 559x18 (i18 I believe).
The stock tyres new from Genesis were Mountain King 2.2
Looking at 26" Maxxis around the same size there's
Ardent 2.25
Minion DHF 2.3
High Roller 2.3
all only a couple of mm wider than the Mountain Kings; But I'm reading Maxxis design these tyres for modern Rim width.
I'd like to use a modern tyre, but am I going to regret putting a modern tyre on an 18mm Rim? would I be better getting somthing more period like some Panaracer Fire? Am i worrying about it too much and should just buy the Maxxis and see how it goes etc.
I have an old 2.25 Ardent 26” as a rear on a 19mm rim. It’s not the best for grip but I find it a good halfway house between grip/rolling resistance for the trail center stuff it’s used on. I think the WT tyres maxxis do now are for the wider rims, so if it’s not WT it should be fine.
Cheers Andy, That's good info. Looks like all the WT tyres are 27.5" 29" so hopfully the 26" will be fine.
I have run 26” 2.3 Ardents on 19mm and presently Aggressors on, I think, 21/22mm DT Swiss rims. I can’t tell any difference apart from the Ardents roll slightly better on the road in-between bridleways.
I can measure both inflated tyre widths for you if clearance is tight - mine are on a 2000 Orange Gringo.
Hope this helps.
If it is limiting your the choice then maybe consider new rims. If you get the same erd it's an easy swap. 26" rims are prey cheap now. You'll get a decent pair for less than the price of one tyre (although that maybe says more about current tyre prices).
@nickjb - That might be the way forward; I've ordered an Ardent to see how it fits but I would like somthing with wet weather in mind for the front like a DHF, so I might look at the rims.
Thanks @wheelsonfire1, I dont think the clearance will be an issure there's quite a gap front and back at the moment, you could probably get a 27.5 on the back TBH. I hope you've got Bar-ends on that Gringo!
I'm coning back to this after ten years off. Amazing how fast the industry abandons tech.
@jim853 6mm clearance either side on the chainstays with the 2.3 Aggressor’s, more with the Fox 32 forks. As for the bar ends - they were so 90’s! (Got stubbies on my general purpose Marin San Raf though!)
I am leaning towards new rims I think.
What width would be apropriate for most modern XC + Trail tyres? would 30mm do it all? I wont be racing 🙂
Just keep them pumped up nice and hard and you'll be fine.
sorry. terrible English... I haven't ridden it yet.
