My old FS 26er took me round the Surrey Hills over the weekend for my first post-lockdown MTB miles. It came out of the shed on four year old Storm Control tyres which grip great but don't have high tolerance for getting rowdy, particularly at the back. Wouldn't mind something a bit less draggy on the back either.

Doesn't look like there are as many 26er options in stock as when I last looked. Purg Grid? Nobby N? DHR2? Should I just run what I brung and wait for the Yeti's (third!) swingarm to crack?

I've been on the lookout and there doesn't seem to that much and certainly not much going cheap. I'm waiting for the Bristol bike jumble to start up again and hopefully someone who thinks 26 is dead us having a clear out.

Definitely a job for the classifieds, still loads of 26 tyres out there in garages etc...

Speaking of which, I'm pretty sure I have a Minion dhf 2.3 and an ardent 2.25 which might be exactly what you're after. And a set of On One Chunky Monkeys which are probably a bit more than you're after on the back.

Not even a stealth ad 😉

What Northwind said!

I've got three 26" tyres from classifieds over the last 12 months. They're hanging in my garage while I wear out the current Hans Dampf's :o)

I'd be interested in those. I still have a couple of Smorgasbords and they pair up nicely. Will PM if you are looking move thme on

I've got a good Maxxis Minion SS 26 x 2.3 and a brand new 26" Conti Baron & Kaiser here if they're any use to you.

Stock is absolutely knackered right now since everyone dragged out their old bikes for lockdown, the options still exist but it'll be a while before they are back in stock. Bike-discount have a few options if you can live with wires.

Second hand is the way to go at the moment.

Loads of kids bikes are coming with 26 wheels now, so maybe look at people focussing on kids bikes/sell pages on Facebook etc.

Tredz had a few 26" options in stock when I looked 2 or 3 weeks ago. Decathlon also had a massive amount in stock when I visited just before lockdown. Most of it was XC related but there were a few other options too. Worth a try if you are near one of their stores.

I've a pair of brand new dual ply minions in the garage if its the sorta thing you're after. Not sure if it'd be 'less draggy' though 🙂

Good to know the stock situation might come back. For now I'll just stick to what I've got, I think. My riding is really just occasional at the minute and the current tyres are definitely good enough.

Is anyone making decent narrow folding 26" XC tyres? Like 2.1" or less? I need some for my monstercross project, but everything I can find new is heavy, and everything second hand is a (relativey) more modern width.

Plenty of Maxxis and Continental 26” available from Madison dealers!
26 isn’t dead, just getting more difficult like eight and nine speed triples.....

I'll let you decide if any of these are decent or not but a few narrow options here:

https://www.decathlon.co.uk/C-755630-bike-tyres/N-281430-wheel-size~26%22

And there were plenty of additional options in store shortly before lockdown.

This thread made me have look in my garage, found a Fat Albert in 26 x 2.25 flavour. Struggling to remember 2.25 being “fat’ and it’s only a few years ago.

@finbar I’ve got a pair used of Hutchison Pythons in 26x1.9/2.0(I can’t remember exactly, but they’re narrow)” if they’re any good?

Thanks @hooli, I never thought to look in Decathlon but makes perfect sense for 26" tyres.

@shedbrewed, thanks, they might be just the job if they're not too worn. Will PM you.

You can get the new Hans Dampf in 26in, it's a great all-rounder and rolls well.
