Looks like my 7yo 135cm tall daughter needs a 24 inch bike.

I'd *like* 'MTB style', rigid forks, rear derailleur only (single speed would do if it really had to be). No need for disc brakes, although I don't object to them.

Bike will for riding along flat bridleways/canal towpaths/New Forest Forestry Commission trails.

To give an idea of what I want: Her current bike is an 18 inch Dawes Blowfish - if there was a 24 inch version of that, perhaps with 6 gears or gears in the hub I'd jump at it. Equally, if nothing better comes up I'll get a Decathlon Rockrider 500 but it obviously fails the gears/susp criteria. I did consider a BMX which ticks the 'simplicity' boxes.

No specific budget, the bare minimum to do the job really, quite happy with a BSO, quite happy with an overweight bike.

Thanks all, but especially TroutWrestler.

Orbea MX 24 Dirt is exactly what I wanted, just bought one. Pretty sure she'll be thrilled, I certainly am.

Vitus 24. We have the 20 and several of our daughters older friends who we ride with have the 24, it’s a great bike for the price. 😀

Carerra Luna or Abyss are decent kids bikes, if you don’t want to spend a lot.

If a preference to Dawes they now do the Squish range

My new favourite kids bike brand is Wiggins.

Got my 8yr old who I expected to go to a 24 a 26" and it's superb. Spec is excellent, rides great and my son loves it. Cheaper than Frog/Hoy/Pinnacle/etc and I dare say better!

Looking at wiggins they appear to be hybrids, not mtb ?

The Squish bikes are quite good. Friday was spent putting 3 together for use at the weekend. Lightweight frames/tyres, ok-ish group bits. Less than 10kg for a 26in wheeled hybrid.

It sounds like the Frog bikes would satisfy your requirements. Good, no frills, lightweight, rigid bikes that will handle road, path or off road cycling.

They are popular, so there are quite a few good second hand ones around now, and you should be able to resell for a good price when it is outgrown.

Thanks for all the suggestions. As I said, I went with the Orbea MX 24 Dirt and we've just wrapped it for her - in the flesh it's exactly what I had in mind. (I'm sure all the other suggestions would have worked just as well.)
