Not been to Newnham before so wondering if Nobby Nics will be OK or will it be a rocky mudfest?

It's been absolutely chucking down in Devon for the last 20hours so it's probably pretty horrible there right now. Unfortunately, the forecasts I've seen are showing rain to continue next week too. However, The soil around Plymouth tends to not get too sticky when it's wet, so it could be worse.

If it does remain wet for the next week, some proper mud tyres might be a good idea. All my Plym riding mates use Bontrager mud tyres in the winter for local riding. If it dries out, Nobby Nics would be an ideal choice for Newnham.

I'm doing the 24hour solo, so I really hope it does dry out.

I am one of sponge's plymouth riding accomplices, and I find my nics a little bit eyebrow raising in the local mud: so many roots and off protruding buts of rock locally (not quite so bad at newnham if i recall correctly). I will have a nic on the front if its dry-ish, but mux-s (or i suppose any other widely spaced super sticky compound) are the way forward if its filthy.

btw the course is still an absolute hoot even in muddy winter badness. Most of the climbs are nice and hard or surfaced so the sketchiness is all downhill. And there is a river crossing to wash your bike off each lap 🙂

Oh and as i type 2 miles away from newnham its abslolutely lobbing it down!

Still pissing down in North Devon. Might bring a snorkel, just in case.

Just took today off, possible thought of a ride after layoff with bad cold.
Ahhh. P*ssing down! time for another cuppa then....
and as said before it's been like it a lot of the week with torrential downpours on occasions.
Then my daughter said " dad there's a tree down in the garden...."
OK, it's a Budleia bush, but tucked in tight to a fence corner giving 90deg. protection and shletered by next door's cottages. Goodness knows what happened last night, but my wife was woken during the night and said it was wild out there!
It's meant to be passing through as the day goes on, but the trails *must* be back to winter bog snorkelling conditions?????
your correspondent in the Teign Valley......

Forecast says dry Sat-Mon, then raining again from Tuesday onwards. I have to say that every race I've ever attended has had cracking/scorching weather, so hpoefully my weather charm will continue.

Looks variable on Accuweathers prediction but tis a long way off in weather terms - hopefully will dry out a bit as can get sticky around by the river!

2miles away from newnham here also. wazzing it down today,. and last nights ride was just terrible (no not newnham but cann just across the road) i'd leave the NN's off in favour of something more mud orientated a la Monsieur wilson's advise, i'll be on 1.8 bonty mud x's if it stays like this, spesh captains if it dries up a bit.

rich quantocks is still on atm, as long as its no torrential and driving wind we'll head up after i finish work around midday, i'll text as we leave.

pray for sun.

Just been looking at synoptic charts and they seem to be saying that we have a succession of lows arriving over us over the next week or so. Not looking good for next weekend, but fingers crossed...

ah the joys of laps in the wet, well at least it'll make for interesting river crossings as that little river does get pretty fast/deep when the rain comes down off the moor like it has been doing.

Spooky, don't suppose you're giving the female entry away? My missus fancies a bash but we're well skint.

Sponging Machine, ticket cost £57 so was hoping to recoup some of that to be honest.

Any ideas if spectators welcome/allowed in?
I'd ignored info about it cos originally would be on hols, but have changed dates and now might be around ( unless last minute panic over hols!).
Not interested ( or currently fit enough ) to ride, but might be interested in hanging out and meeting some STW'-ers.....
Have good memories of the Grundigs and stunned at watching Tomac in his last season blitzing people on the Pipeline and show boating in the bomb holes!
so might be interested in popping down.

spectators are pretty much always very welcome at newnham. My family popped in and out a few times last year (we only live down the road). Not sure about camping but i suppose there will be so many people there i doubt anyone would notice one extra tent...
