So got the son a new road bike which came with 25-520 tyres on it (slicks). These are fine for road rides and the races he is hoping to do over the summer but also wanted something a bit wider and with a bit of tread for some easy gravel.
I want to get something with a bit of tread on it but can’t find anything in 520. I have some 507 small block 8s but they are no where near fitting. I have found some 37-540 - would they fit ok? Obviously slightly larger but the rim is quite deep.
Didn’t realise there were so many rim diameter differences in 24” bikes!
Any recommendations in the 520 size at all?
You might find some 24" bmx tires with some knobs in 520 (smaller than SB8 though)
But I don't think you'll find actual mtb style tyres.
You're stuck with 520 though, it's driven by the rim.
Look around and you’ll find 35-520 CX tyres (sometimes even in stock) which should be enough width for a child gravel riding (probably).
Those are out of stock unfortunately and have spent hours searching for something else but no luck. Double checked the spec and the website was wrong (says 507mm size). They said as it has been used I can’t return it despite it being wrong. Have gone back to them on that I only want to find something so he can ride along some towpaths or old rail lines with it - nothing extreme. 25mm slick isn’t great in the U.K. winter time.
I looked on SJS cycles, which is my usual source for unusual parts, and even they only list two 520 size tyres, both of which are narrow slicks.
You might be better getting a new pair of 507 wheels which appears to have many more options. Maybe the supplier would sort that out or give you a part refund to cover the cost. Looks like they cost about 60 quid on eBay.
Well I messaged the company that shermer suggested and they had some in stock so ordered them and should be here at some point next week!
I did look at 507 wheels but these are discs and through axles so a bit harder to find.
Better than rim brakes if you’re changing rim sizes though.
