Hi, the time has come for a proper bike for the boy. He is nearly 8, riding lots more and growing in confidence. We live very close to a big mountain bike park so i'm thinking he'll be riding there sooner rather than later.

So, tips for good quality hardtails or full sus please. should i buy off the shelf? would rather get something to build to be honest, second hand is of course fine too! any good builds on here? thanks fellow mums and dads

We've got an Orbea MX24 and it is excellent.

Plenty second hand on eBay.

Got a Stinky 2-4 2nd hand on here, and rebuilt it as something much lighter.

It lost 9lbs in weight. Still not super light though.

Did the elder one until he was 12 and our younger one now rides it.

Tips? Tiny chainrings and wide range cassettes. Avid Rollamajigs lighten gear action. Air suspension is required not coil.

Both our girls had Stinky JRs, served them well and didn't loose much on resale. Once they went onto 26" wheels we bought frames and built up from bits that could be moved to a bigger frame as and when required.

I've got a nice 24" Gary Fisher frame for sale cheap if of interest. I ran it with retro manitou 26" forks.

He's progressing to a XS 1993 kona!
