So my big boy has almost grown out of the 20" mtb that's served him well. Looking for something of similar quality but with no budget to hand!

So am I best off trying to get specialised/trek/giant bargain on eBay or could I build something up from 2nd hand parts ? I'm thinking this might be a good way of getting better forks than the ubiquitous sun tour rubbish.

Anyone built up a kids bike on a budget.

We bought two complete, and added a couple of new bits. They are ace. Geometry is king, next to weight.
If you build, I think it is hard to find short cranks or light wheels etc. It will be costly.
We buy second hand.
Kona was £120, is heavier, but great geometry for the kids when they first get on - low bb and high bars.

The Scott was £80, and is much lighter. The brakes were crap, so I put new ones on. Better geometry now they are taller - and the kids prefer this bike as it is noticeably faster.

My lads just on the cusp of outgrowing his 20" Islabike.
I've been putting him a 12" framed, 26" wheel Hotrock together. Awful Suntour fork is going in the bin, in lieu of an Exotic rigid I picked up. Gears down to a 1x9 set-up. Have picked up some Deore disc hubs so I can rebuild the wheels, & put some old Jucy's on. To be honest it's more a future project. I did look at building some 24" rims on it as a stop gap, but it's a frame that's still too big for him for at least a year.

So I've just picked him up a 24" Hotrock last week. Again the awful Suntour fork will go in the bin. Few other upgrades, 1x9 gears etc. That will shed a couple of pounds. The 26" wheeled one can wait a while for him. He's got a younger brother who's just grown into his Islabike. 🙂

Got a Carrera Blast second hand. Think it was 60 quid all in. So far so good.

Thanks for answers. Kids look like they're having fun Matt.

Thanks for offers not quitevready to buy yet but will get back in touch in case you still have it later in summer.
Having said that the trek is cheap! What is condition like.

Out of interest takisawa2 what are you replacing the sun tour fork with. And also do you just swap the derailleur and cassette with a 9spd onto the same wheel ?

I got my kid a 24" Hotrock from the classifieds. Luckily the seller lived about 10 mins away.
I wouldn't bother changing the damn forks! The kids weigh about 6 stone, so won't benefit from better forks at all.
And crank length isn't important either - the bike had 160mm cranks and the pedals were seized - swapped the cranks for some 170s I had spare. Managed to get the pedals off the old ones and he won't let me put them back on 🙂

Probably a 420mm Exotic again.
They do a 24" wheel version, but I think a 420mm rigid should be ok, given the 25mm drop from the wheel radius.

9spd depends on what's on it...
I think 6 & 7spd are same width, but 8,9 & 10 are wider.
I'll just lace a new hub on if needed, need to check the dropout width first.

Our eldest boy went from beinn 20 large to beinn 26 small. He now also has a 13 inch trek 4300 (he is 10). His wee bro is still on the beinn 20 and age 6, but only about 3cm seatpost available, so big fights coming soon !

Dezb...changing the forks was more to get some weight off it, rather than some that worked better.

Not really that big, he could still chuck it about ok, just not as well as his 20" at first. The 20" was trashed thought so I didn't really have many options. Fits him fine now.

That kona looks built like a tank. Is it a smoke...can't make out the text?

Shred 24. It's a bit burly, but it rides fine and it's never going to break. This is important considering previous bikes died painful deaths 1x sheared headtube, 1x destroyed wheels/fork/ drivetrain.

My daughter has grown out of her 24" Hotrock Full suspension so it's up for grabs. Have got the original seat as I swapped it for a ladies one for her. Great condition apart from the seals on the forks are cracked, but can be replaced, forks and rear shock all work very well, condition is very good, but has some signs of use. Available to see/collect in Leeds or can drop in Sheffield, Darlington, central Machester. Mail me if of any interest, looking for £250

As Iainc above my tall 9 year old went from a 20 gary fisher pre caliber to a 13 trek 4300 26, got the 2012 model at a very good price. I looked at the genesis core 24 and isla but not for me.

dump the suntours & get something like some old school rigid P2s - length is just about perfect & importantly nice & light.

I also have a kona hula on 26" wheels that would suit a 9-11 year old.

Slight hijack, but a different question from me - how much difference does front suspension really make for a skinny 8 year old?

Looking between:
1) a "good" 24" bike, with what I suspect are horrifically shit forks, and non suitable components, but that would help my boy ride further and faster with me and pals (e.g. Kona Kula)

2) no frills Islabike with rigid forks but proper tyres (Beinn 24)

3) a more fancy Isla bike with decent forks and stuff (Creig 24)

The last option is really expensive, the top option is expensive if it is no good, the middle option safest.

Thoughts?

Even if the forks arent ace, they make a difference.

First summer in the mountains, my son had a rigid and he got battered. Second year my son had a hotrock with cheap forks and he did way better and managed full days of uplifts.
Last year we met a really good BMX racer (worlds semis 6y) who struggled on his rigid bike.
Even 1.5 inches of (not great) travel takes the sting out of the trail.

It's used but is in good nick. Email me and I'll send pics. It's no where near the bling tastic one above but then it is only eighty quid. If it doesn't sell I'll save it for the grand kids....

Abigale was on a Hotrock FSR at age six, had to fetch it from France as Spec UK wouldnt import them.

[img] [/img]

Katie had a Stinky JR

[img] [/img]

We took them to Verbier the same year and she and her sister had a great time

[img] [/img]

Both held there price for resale as they out grew them

@citizen kane I'm interested in that Trek if it's still for sale? My son's 24" Hotrock FSR has given up the ghost. Can you email me at matt at studiolift dot com with an idea of price and location?

My lads 24" Carrera Luna (actually a girls bike with the flowers covered with manly stickers). I've a set of old u-turn revs to put on, and will probably stick a 26" wheel on the front.

Should get around to putting the Exotics on my lads 24" Hotrock this weekend, so will post up some pics. Decent lightweight 24" Rims are an issue because the only thing availabe are heavy dirt jumping types.
