Getting new forks, at the moment I'm pretty settled on getting Sektors that will fit with my 9mm QR wheels. Is it worth the extra getting a maxle version and getting a new hub?

You definitely feel the difference with 20mm IMO, but as to whether you need it is a different matter. Depends a lot on how much spare cash you have I suppose 😀 . What travel forks you going for & where you ride (worth it for rock gardens).
You should be able to get new lowers later, is worth bearing in mind

Looking for 140/150mm. There's lot of rocky descents for me to mince down round here.

Yes IMO

Get a convertable hub such as the hope.

apart from some rigidity differences you may or may not notice a 20 mm axle is much more secure

On the other hand, unless you build them yourself, the expense of buying a replacement hub (which is sized to use your existing spokes) and getting a wheel build may cost more than the improvement merits.

Yep, 20mm is worth it. Build your own wheel. Its ace once you do. Easy, just take your time. I've done 2 this Christams. Quality time.

I've got a spare superstar hub, in perfect condition you can have for £20 delivered. black, 20mm. can be QR also with adapters.

What hub / rim do you have currently as you may be able to re-use your spokes making the change low cost.

I've got an old but very good Hope XC hub. Let me think about it...

You could use one of those 9mm axles from SSC instead. BTW Do you remember, a few years ago we all rode our bikes up and down the mountains with QR wheels. Sometimes there was an allen key bolt instead of the QR lever.

"Sometimes there was an allen key bolt instead of the QR lever. "

Sometimes there still is 🙂

I had QR Revelations, "upgraded" to maxle Revelations. Now they were stiffer, and they did feel stiffer, but did it make any actual difference to my riding? Not at all. And before people say "Oh, mincers don't need maxles" those QR Revs did pretty well on a wee trip to fort william 😉 So, I went back to QR as it was lighter.

It does make a difference but don't get hung up over it. If I had QR only wheels I'd get QR only forks.

I'm not convinced it makes an actual difference in riding where the fork is more or less the same.

security issues are non-issues IMO/E.

Wot Al said.

If you're a bifter (12st+) then you might notice a difference but I'm generally unconvinced that the majority of riders in the real world outside the internet would notice.

Certainly not worth spending money on a wheel rebuild and hub for.

tut tut Spokes you should know better -QR wheels literally evacuate dropouts every minute somewhere in the world. Irresponsible. 😛

Some of the best deals around are on QR forks Mackem so if you find what you like at a good deal then go for it. You can always change lowers later if you feel like it. The overall cost may still be a saving at the end of it.

Look like a bargain but do you get stung with import duty/taxes when you buy stuff from the EEC?

No, the VAT is already paid in Germany, no import tax between EU countries.

9mm qr will be fine. Some riders may be able to feel the difference but in reality, it won't make you faster. There are more important things on a bike that make a difference.

I'm a 20mm convert, but unless your shopping for new kit anyway its not worth changing on the merits of thru-axle alone, at least not for trail riding anyway. If your keen on hitting bigger stuff then it is better.
