I need to replace my long lasting Fox Ranger 3L trousers, before I just buy another pair, I wondered if there is anything better out there? I'm happy with them overall but abit more room around the knee pad would be great. Do you have any suggestions to sway me away from Fox?

I was going to recommend the Ranger 3L's before I read your post, but curious to see what other options may be good!

I've got TLDs version, they're great surprisingly being designed where it doesn't rain ! Madison DTE are worth looking at as well .

Just ordered two more pairs of Altura over shorts at half price.

The original pair are pretty good. Probably not as good as the Fox shorts I have,  but pretty good

I think I looked into them last year and got the impression they are built for slightly portlier riders

I’m still happy with my TLD resists’s. Just took em out last weekend. Definitely at the “rubbery” end of the spectrum, particular last weekend which wasn’t particularly cold so rubber vs bare skin, but was tolerable. Once winter sets in, it’s tights underneath at which point the trousers are excellent as a fully fully waterproof, well shaped outer layer.

@Jedi, Hows it going?!  Are the defend breathable?  I tend to get very hot in the more 'waterproof' type gear, so I'm worried the defend will be too hot?

I've got two pairs of these, I'm really impresssed -

https://www.regatta.com/mens-dayhike-waterproof-trousers-iv-black/?

Room for kneepads and they do a long length so they don't ride up at the ankle as you pedal.

Waterproof in all but biblical rain.

Anyone coming into this thread riding an ebike. I can't recommend a drysuit enough. I have the Leatt 5.0

Game changer for crappy weather. Wouldn't really fancy it on a pedally bike though

Just had a pair of these arrive;

https://www.sportpursuit.com/catalog/product/view/id/3321409

not ridden in them yet but nice and stretchy, good fit and look well made. Not fully waterproof but soft shell works well for most of my riding, if it’s lashing it down I go for the Dirtlej suit.

I've got some Fox and some Endura.

The Fox seems warmer, especially when wet

However, the Endura has a much better closer, the Fox one is a nightmare to open with gloves/frozen hands/if it gets a lot of mud in it, and the Endura has better leg length.

Overall I prefer the Endura, the extra warmth of the Fox is outweighed by it letting more water into my boots. Although I've just bought some calf length 45Nrth boots which might solve this.

+1 on I struggle with full waterproofs.

I have an ancient pair of Endura over the knee waterproof shorts I need to replace at somepoint soon. I prefer them in torrential rain, as I get as wet from sweat as I do the rain...
I often team them up with long bibs, one pair of which has waterproof ish shin.

So, I thought I'd give the Madison's a go.

The fit is good, must be some others I was thinking of for suiting chunks

Went for the medium with long leg - 12.5st, 5'11", 33/34 inside leg

Should be good for when I don't want the full drysuit and keeping my back warm. Feel like they will run warm, but we'll see. Will report back after a ride

Yeah I like those they seem like such a good idea for properly grim days.

Fingers crossed for a black Friday sale price!

Thunderpants from 7Mesh or one of the Dirtlj trousers are the best I have had. For a cheaper option a few mates swear by the Troy Lee Resist trooser.

Those Madison dungarees ^

They claim a 20/40k waterproof/breathability rating.

I've got an MT500 jacket that claims the same and it is definitely cooler than a 20/20k eVent jacket that I was using prior.

Both jackets are the same size and a similar fit. The Endura is the same size when packed so the amount of material is basically the same. It's definitely cooler riding in it than the eVent which makes me think that the 40k breathability thing actually works. If the Madisons are a similar material, they may well run cooler than expected.

I mean, they'll still be sweaty but hopefully less sweaty than everything else.

Have they got any vents on them? Or mesh lined pockets that you can use as vents? Piccies on Freewheel would suggest not.

Not vents as such, but there's a big zip down one side to presumably make them easier to get on, but will double up as a vent, as there is a popper at the top to stop flappage. Would be better if they put one both sides as on the opposite side is a very weird, almost useless pocket instead

33/34?  still nothing for those of us who need 35" or longer.  2" short is a lot when it comes to effectiveness.  Is it really too much to ask that manufacturers do 'regular' length and then long enough for anyone, hem to fit.?

waterproofs are so sweaty I'd really like something 'highly water resistant but not seam sealed' for riding in. Riding when it has been wet rather than actually in the rain (those Ion Shelter look perfect but id need an xl or xxl to get leg length and a m for waist.). SP pricing is optimistic.  £150 on ion uk. 186 on SP)

Just ordered some TLD resist for €65 delivered (I’m in Austria). They only had 30” waist but worth a punt at that price.

There's spare length in those I'm wearing, I reckon they'd do for a 35" leg. Not sure if large/long leg gives a longer leg than the medium/long leg

Sport Pursuit have Alpinestars Tahoe waterproof strides for £29 at the moment. They're only 8k waterproof and 3k breathable but fine if you're on an EBike and not getting all heated up.

Sadly it IS the right time of year for this kind of chat

I like my old Madison DTE (the model with different coloured knee patches, the newer ones seem a bit flimsy.) But, like many I feel long waterproof pants are pretty warm.

I've often liked using the short version of those early Madison DTE's with kneepads and Sealskinz.
It's cooler that way for sure and more 'free' feeling, but, of course, there's no filthy trousers off moment - get into the car clean at the ride end. and more muddy kit to ruin the washing machine. Trousers can be hosed off with the bike.

Folk talk about the Endura Spray pants as the ideal UK solution - but they really soon get proper soaked, even a bit of wet foliage or a few puddles and you've got unpleasantly cold fabric flapping against the shins - yeah long Sealskinz solve that - but you might aswell go for shorts then

33/34, you might like the Decathlon Rockrider pants. Quite a bargain, water resistant (i.e. DWR) not a membrane

https://www.bikeradar.com/reviews/clothing/trousers/decathlon-rockrider-all-mountain-bottoms-review

or, perhaps more waterproof:

https://www.mbr.co.uk/reviews/trousers-pants/decathlon-rockrider-st500-winter-trousers

Endura Spray are great, comfy, not rustly and long enough for my 6.2 legs -  if it's not currently training and you avoid puddles / wet foliage.

For us long legged freaks....

I've been using these for a couple of years now.  Normally much cheaper in the sale

https://www.craghoppers.com/mens-stefan-ii-waterproof-trousers-black-1/

A nice fit on my 36" inside leg, not too hot, keep me fairly dry and they breath relatively well

Would like to find some cycling specific long legged trouser but yet to find anything - so if someone can point me in the right direction - please do!

Just ordered some TLD resist for €65 delivered (I’m in Austria). They only had 30” waist but worth a punt at that price.

I've got some in that size. I'm normally a 30 with a 30" inseam. They fit me really well. Perhaps a little loose at the waist. They're quite a slim fit overall but there's still room for pads. The ankles taper down and there isn't really much (any) stretch in the material. They fit over the tops of my Lake boots fine but wouldn't go over my Mavic Xa Pro (like a hiking boot). The chainring side ankle is reinforced as are the inner things and seat.

They felt horrible when I took them out of the bag. Kind of rubbery and like they'd be a sweat fest. They're not actually too bad when you're wearing them though. I bought some cheap cycle tights to wear underneath them but haven't actually felt the need yet. Maybe it it was properly cold but so far, they're been good.

They did start letting water in the last time I wore them (last year) but that was towards the end of a 40 mile ride in the Peak with constant rain for 7 hours. It was enough to notice it collecting in my boots but I was still warm so didn't care.

Thinking of some army surplus goretex. I'm a  34 in jeans , am I a 34 in overtrousers or do I need to measure wearing my cycling trousers?

@boltonjon

How so? their size chart says long is 33" (and extra long 35", but dont seem to have that trouser in x-long).

Ive got ex-airforce over trousers picked up on  a recommendation from here and their proper 36 leg. not a riding cut though=too baggy  in the lower leg.  good for walking

(I have quite a lot of surplus clothing as I'm like the High Street the military recognise that clothes actually have to fit all people and that we exist  so you can find stuff with proper long legs and also long bodies and jackets and shirts.  A NATO sizing his real dimensions of proper waist hip and leg in metric, not imperial.). Not much of it, blue air force stuff around anymore though I think it was sold.

havent used mine for years, and was working outside yesterday in the wind and rain, so decided to wear them.  noticed a tear on them so thought id look for another pair.

just been to look at the sizing.  i. 5'10 and 34 waist if that helps.

I’m 5-10 and 34 waist and tried on the Madison DTE bib trousers and they were very tight

I usually wear a pair of brushed winter tights and there’s no way the popper on the waist was staying closed even on them with just boxers on

so I recon a L is better

also liking the look of the Endura bib trousers which have zips at the ankles which might make them easier to get off

i tried on a pair of the Fox 3L trousers with fur inside

disnt feel like they would be proper waterproof, more like a softshell feel

@singlespeedstu - I've got a set and they are fantastic. Only used once so far on a gopping ride after the last storm. Not raining but very wet on the trails.

These paired with a set of winter boots meant I was dry and warm but not cooking. The fit is great and the cut means they are better on the bike, but I should have gone for the long. I'm 6ft and a 33 ish leg so thought I'd get away with it, but annoyingly they are just a midge short.

It's odd having nice warm legs and a cool top. Usually it the other way round but setting!

Not so stealth ad - if anyone wants a set of the madison Dte dungies large/gree/reg let me know. I'd do a deal!
