Hi all,

I've narrowed my next new bike to the 2020 Trek Fuel EX8 as a bit of a do it all bike, albeit Trail oriented.

Just wondering if anyone had any views/advice on whether to go for the SRAM GX Eagle model or the new Shimano XT 1x12? I personally prefer Shimano thumb and finger shifters but I've never had SRAM GX Eagle.

Thanks!

I've got Sram GX on my Bird, I miss the finger trigger and multiple up shifts of shimano.

Yes I prefer the Shimano up shift too and it's perhaps a little less finicky as the GX. I prefer the Sram cassette though.

Shimano cassettes are like boat anchors. Haven't used Shimano since XX1 11 speed days, until now. I am fed up of SRAM clutches failing, and now with type 3 mechs being non adjustable.

So, I've got an XTR shifter and mech to go on my XX1 Eagle drive train. Which is probably the best of both worlds. We shall see.

More importantly, which is the better colour?

12 spd Shimano cassettes are not at all like boat anchors. They also shift far better under load than anything else.

Cant speak of shimano 12 speed but find the Sram GX is much smoother in changing than the shimano 1x11 speed which I have on another bike as said above the XT looks the nicer bike.

My GX RD top jockey wheel exploded during an enduro race wrecking the cage, although to be fair it had worked fine until then. So despite having Eagle on other bikes, I’m now XTR RD & shifter, with sram cassette and chain - works perfectly and TBH I prefer it. The XT will be great.

Shimano for me. Have it on my new Bird and it works a treat from 1 - 12. Only downside was that I couldn't get Hope hubs with Shimano but that changes in Jan 2020.

My SRAM GX and NX experience over the last three years has sent me back to Shimano.
Exploding top jockey wheel, wobbly mechs (it's a "feature") leading to total mech implosion, GX shifters that have enough space in them that dumping a few years rapidly can lead to the cable end jumping out its stop and jamming the thing up and don't even get me started on SRAM BB lack of longevity...

Meanwhile our Shimano bikes just work. The only issue I've had is a dodgy set of Deore 2-pot brakes. I'm now on Deore 4-pot and happy as a pig in muck.
