You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Now we're well into the Christmas wind-down, what's on your to-do list on the bike for next year?
Id like to do more long distance stuff next year, so I've got:
1) Metric century on the MTB
2) 3 or 4 day MTB ride from home in Cumbria to my sisters in Leeds.
What have you got?
Ride Finale
Race DH again
Adapt back to UK conditions after 6 years out
Singletrack 7 solo.
Go touring.
That's it so far...
Ride more.
After buying my first home and spending 5 months of this year working on it, I look forward to having more time and more motivation to hopefully ride atleast twice a week.
Grand total of 222.7 miles this year 🙁
Continue running my FLAB social rides, and build it up for those in my group who are riding the FLAB sportive in May.
Help get the local council Cycle for Health rides up and running.
Get out more with the new club and get fit enough to lead the fast inters groups
Ride 5000 miles.
Ride a 200k audax
Beat whatever shockingly bad time I post in the clubs inaugural hill climb event on Boxing Day.
Ride 325 miles in one go from the bottom of Scotland to the top.
Preparation has already begun although I've not yet managed any ride over 4 hours! Still, 6 months to go... 🙄
Find time around my new home arrangements to get out on the bike.
Have fun.
Maybe finally get around to visiting the local BMX track to have a go.
Use the track bike or sell it.
Do more nights away.
Ride more.
I was also going to add 3) Go to NZ, but it would have to be proceeded by 2.1) Rob post office 😀
I'm going to:
Ride in Madeira
Do some bikepacking in the Alps
Actually ride on that bike park I built
Finish Grinduro this time
Do the Ride to the Sun event
Probably won't try and do as much distance as this year - a bit weary now 😳
Faster time on the HT550
A couple of other ITTs
Get back on it basically, the latter half of 2017 has been a bit of a shit tip due to loosing motivation after a disastrous Mountain Mayhem 24hr Solo,
retired at 5am and 16 or 17 laps and sitting comfortably in top 20, picking up a place every hour or so in as I just couldn't take anymore, then getting a bit back for Torq 12:12 coming in 15th Overall and 5th Vet in 12hr solo then proceeding to smash myself up on the 3 Peaks and writing off most of my cyclocross season.
Target wise it's continue with my new found favorite winter training location, Manchester Velodrome to get fitness and speed back then start building things up towards a tilt at the European 24hr solo age groupers in Slovakia in June.
Throw in a bit of XC racing, a couple of marathons here and there, Single Track 7 Solo and probably 10 Under or the one down south on the same'ish weekend and all should be rite.
My aim is to have no targets lol.
I am going to start riding for fun only again, not worry about strava segments, average speeds, mileage etc.
Basically learn how to bimble and enjoy being out on the bike again as I think the above have sucked a lot of the fun out of it for me this year.
Would like to do the SDW again now I know what's in store so can prepare better (and get a drier run).
Skills need a refresher too, can feel bad habits becoming ingrained.
Do more exploring and not worry about getting miles in (the focus of the last 2 years).
I've entered the tour of Wessex. So I better start training....
Actually I did start training in October, but got three consecutive calf strains running and now Christmas is getting in the way, so the new year is about hitting it hard!
Most I've done so far is 70 miles in the yorkshire dales.
Do a couple of Enduros, ride my bike more and have lots of fun doing it.
Have a discussion with my mates as to where we will go for our 3-4 days at the end of May ..MTB stay.
Arran has again been mentioned and I wouldn't be too unhappy with that..as has The Cairngorms again ..
My personal choice would be to go back to Torridon as there are a couple of rides in the area that I haven't as yet done ( Poolewe being one ) ..so a bit of talking to do in January ..
Other than that our regular Saturday rides somewhere in the north ..another fairly local bothy stay over ..we have 5 within striking distance local to each other ..and a mid week ride which is mostly solo ..
No targets in terms of mileage ..but it will be fairly substantial ( off road mileage )
Oh ..and to show a few of the forum members that have been in touch by PM some of our local trails ..
Fewer miles and more fun.
I'm starting a new job in January which is 15 minutes walk from my front door, so I'll be losing a 12 mile a day commute. It's been extremely difficult to get motivated for weekend rides after a week of icy wet misery.
I'm planning on signing up for the South Lakes Jennride and hopefully doing a few more bikepacking rides as well as that.
There's some cheeky trails near us that could do with a bit of love, now things are nice and wet it's time to get the shovel out (though that might be the end of this year as well as next).
Might get a BMX to play on the local skatepark, might get back on my skateboard. Not decided yet.
My aim is to have no targets lol.
I am going to start riding for fun only again, not worry about strava segments, average speeds, mileage etc.
Basically learn how to bimble and enjoy being out on the bike again as I think the above have sucked a lot of the fun out of it for me this year.
I did this in 2017, its great!
Singletrack 7 again I think, maybe a few longer off road sportives. Possibly a 24hr
Trip to Norway, learn tuck no handers, maintain teeth in current condition.
Just get out more. wice a week, without fail, at least - mor emiles, more fitness, more skills.
Maybe I should get one of those stravas like all the youngsters have nowadays
What are my goals? To ride more.
This year has been plagued by injury from a race in May & a smashed up shoulder. Hopefully the CT scan this Friday will confirm I'm good to go properly.
Subsequently to race a bit more. I've entered 8 races already for next year - I go up an age category this season so if I have a good winter of riding (rather than boring myself on a turbo) I should win a few.
A year of change for me - I'll be glad when it's over & starting again, as it's not been easy on many levels.
Most of all, I'm excited to be riding again, which is best bit 🙂
3 for me for next year.
1) Cycle the West Highland way.
2) Finally go a cycle tour of the Western Isles off Scotland, living in Glasgow I have only been to a few islands, and never on the bike, need to put that right.
3) Do a week or so Euro tour, did my first ever touring trip earlier this year and loved it.
Generally just to keep riding as much as possible and most importantly, keep enjoying it.
Though I'm going to have a crack at the Peak District Lord of the Loops, do another century on the road bike and do as many enduro's as possible. Unlike Hob Nob I won't be anywhere near the podium or top half for that matter 😀
I'd also like to get to the top of some more proper mountains.
1. Hopefully not get a 2nd detached retina
2. Have fun at Tro Bro Leon and Strada Bianche
3. That it'll be dry for Gravel Dash 50:50
4. Either ride Tuscany Trails (again) or Apulia Trail or Tour de la Resistance
5. Do an out and back in the Cevennes - pretending to be The Rider 😉
6. Maybe do Exmouth Exodus again, but ride to Bath on Saturday
7. Broadly have fun...
1. Ride more than this year
2. Take part in the G-Form Enjoyro
2017 was a washout, really lost the mojo. 2018 will hopefully be a lot better. A Welsh trail centre jaunt is already penciled in and I'll hopefully get a few uplift days and Fort William ones too. Pointing towards going down without really pedalling up kinda thing.
Ride more, have fewer excuses for not riding - get my bike mojo back!
Actually, all I really want is to get back to where I was fitness wise around July this year, which is the fittest I’ve ever been, but various injuries (hip issue, tearing a hole in my knee, toe saga) conspired to put me back to where I was this time last year, only a stone heavier 👿
Just the thread I was looking for, and will follow with interest ... Got my Singletrack 2018 calendar to fill up! 🙂
I turn 50 this year, so was wanting to do some new 'challenges' ... and have a new bike on the way to put through its paces.
Balancing what I want to do, with what time I will have available, will be the trick / challenge, and it may well be that it will have to become a decade of challenges! And the money - available cash has bought the new bike, but I still need bike-packing gear / entry fees etc!
So far, musing on:
1. Dirty Reiver - done it the last 2 years, so not sure I will enter again;
2. Turin-Nice in September - would be a great trip, trouble is I think I've probably spent my air-fare on the new bike,. so funding this might be the problem ...
3. 3PCX - first time last year, definitely got unfinished business! Only takes a day out so would fit in well with other commitments
4. The 'This is not a tour' Welsh Audax bike rides in the spirit of Mike Hall - possibly the 400km event.
5. One or some of the 'Racing Collective' Cross-duro events
6. Possibly a 24 hour or a marathon MTB event?
7. One or two weekends away with the lads, playing on MTB's in the mountains (North Wales, Lakes), enjoying beers and having laugh's.
I want to do some longer backpacking rides, but realistically the Gravel Dash 50:50 at the end of May will probably be the zenith next year.
I have a hankering to do the Wessex Way - but not sure when...
2017 goals I'd made for myself:
1/ cycle an average of 10km per day (3650km)
2/ learn how to leave the ground and be confident to land on my pedals every time (thanks Tony and Tom for helping with this)
3/ build a bike for the first time
4/ get an app on the app store
Only achieved #3 at 100% - close on 1 and 2, but I dumped 4 and started learning python instead.
2018 has the potential to be brilliant:
1/ cycle an average of 5 hours a week - time is a better measure than distance,
2/ enter a mtb cycling event (probably singletrack 7),
3/ do a multi-day gravel bike ride from home and the get the train home,
4/ get hitched and get a house / stop renting.
to try and go a year without surgery.
to organise some stw rides so i can meet up with some old friends to ride again.
the try and get something that seems like fitness back.
Put medical problems/injuries behind me. Train small and steady. Build it up. Am already two years behind in cycle touring/bikepacking plans owing to stubborn inguinal tears and other stuff currently under investigation.
Also - think more about riding and less about bikes.
Nothing big. I try to stay healthy...
longer trips: tried Austria mountain biking (again). Was nice - but at the same time was surprised to find everywhere "NO MOUNTAIN BIKING" signs now. Things change... 😥
will try France again. Jura area. Did that years ago and it was wonderful. 🙄
i'd just actually like to ride my bikes a bit. don't care where really.
Fun goals as usual for me.
- Break 1500 miles on Strava. Not done this since having kids
- Dyfi Enduro
- Ride in the alps again
- Do another multi-day ride, probably the Sandstone way
- Build an Orange Stage 5
- Do more mountain rides (although I managed a couple this year)
Came into 2017 with plans to do loads of miles and get away with the road bike more. Ended up riding 80% or more MTB this year and really loving it.
Am actually gonna do more base miles this winter, but other than that I'll probably just see what I fancy.
1) Metric century on the MTB
I'd be up for doing this with you Andy, if we could find a flattish but interesting route.
This year is the third year I've tried to ride 3000 miles.. last year I finished on 2897, as of today (with 11 days to go) I'm at 2849.
Regardless of if I achieve it this year, I'm going to try and ride 3000 miles again next year.
Riding London to Amsterdam in May-18
Will do Ride London in 2018 if I get a place in the ballot.
Ride my MTB (didn't ride it at all in 2017)
Ride with my kids a bit more.
Retire from racing after 25+ years on the treadmill.
Ride for cake and stay fit enough to take part in the weekly burnup with mates.
as of today (with 11 days to go) I'm at 2849.
151 miles in a week and a half? You can do that.
Do you want us to cheer you on?
@cha****ng - there was the metric century a month thread for 2017, might be worth another one. I managed ten months this year but actually 25 century rides of which 13 were off-road. Eight out of the ten imperial centuries were off-road as well.
1. ride more in 2018 - 2017 was somewhat marred by breaking pelvis at Swinley in April
2. ride the apparently soon-to-be-opening "Bike Park Bishopstoke" in my local woods
3. get some coaching to enable me to jump and drop safely during 2. so I don't end up doing 1. again
also..buy a new bike...ride the SDW...MTB w/e away in the Lakes maybe
Also aiming for 3,000 this year, and currently on 2,920ish. Couple more commutes should take me to 2,950, then I have a week and a bit to squeeze in 50 miles of fun. What a hardship...
@cha****ng - there was the metric century a month thread for 2017, might be worth another one.
I took part and actually joined the Strava group in my enthusiasm, but only managed two or three 100km rides.
Still, I did do plenty of big days (50km or so) in the hills on long travel enduro bikes, so I'm not feeling down about it. On the contrary it's good to get the MTB love back.
2018 Cycling goal for me is to ride a lot more. Had some big change this year with my job which has made massive changes to my lifestyle so I have no excuses now for not riding more.
I see them as something to encourage you to get out. I "signed up for" the Bivy-a-month challenge in a similar vein. If you use Veloviewer then the Explorer square count makes a good challenge as it gets you to new places. The challenge is to try to get as big an X-by-X square of map tiles as you can. The squares are Open Source Mapping tiles at zoom level 10 (I think) and are slightly larger than OS 1Km squares. You have to get quite "inventive" to get some of them 😉
1) Improve on 11.5 hrs for the Gravel Dash 100 - dependent on second sprogs imminent arrival 3 days beforehand! 😕
2) Complete 2600 miles in the year so 50 miles per week of commuting and MTB
3) Make some bike packing kit for the fat bike so I can get out in 2019

1) Metric century on the MTB
I'd be up for doing this with you Andy, if we could find a flattish but interesting route
Hoping the Segment will turn out just the job. Can't promise the Flat bit though!
1. Get to work early more. Leave work on time more. Go to bed early more, get up earlier.
2. Spend more time riding bikes and less time writing about them
3. Do some more events that put me out of my comfort zone. Probably longer ones
4. Ride some form of coast to coast
5. Visit big mountains more
6. Master navigating with map and compass
7. Get rid of bikes, clothes and components that I've not used in the last year.
8. More road trips!
9. Lose some weight
10. Interview some of my heroes
Get rid of lurgy I've had for the past year. I'd be happy with that.
South Downs Double
Fred Whitton
300km Audax
I have more free time next year than any of the last 20!
Hmmmmmm.
Lots of things.
Torino - Nice in September. I have a rather lovely DeAnima custom steel gravel bike coming on long term test for that one. 😀
Haute Route - I've put it off too many times so time to do it I reckon.
Visit Italy again to do some gravel rides.
Road riding in Mallorca.
Do lots more Munros by bike. I have a tick list to complete.
Do an off road version of the Fred Whitton in a day.
Ride the off road Coast to Coast in Englandshire as a pub to pub jaunt.
Ride in Sweden again.
Go beach riding with my daughter on her fat bike.
Do a few overnight bikepacking trips.
All good!
.Get my average number of rides per week back up to 2 or more now that my infant daughter is sleeping better, she'll be 2 in May.
.Get up the Peak District more and also to ride Cutgate & back from Ladybower. Explore more of the White Peak.
.Lakes trip in Sept as per..
For whatever reason I've just not been riding as much as usual, so I want to get into the holidays/new year and turn that around. Honestly other'n that I'm happy with the things and the way I ride so I'm not out to set new challenges or benchmarks or whatever. I want to ride some new places, I want to ride most of the old places.
Oh and who knows maybe I'll finally do the WHW after saying I will every year for pretty much a decade.
And I'd like to sell more of the stuff I'm not using!
Interview some of my heroes
I’m free on 10th Jan?
Hoping the Segment will turn out just the job. Can't promise the Flat bit though!
No hike-a-bikes at least.
Turn commutes into training rides, get back down to racing fettle, do an MTB marathon event, a cross race (started manflu the day before Ulverston cx event, which was especially gutting as I'd built a bike for it) and maybe another stab at enduro. Get up some mountains, Helvellyn in particular. A days riding in the Alps if I can get the family holiday there.
Ride more!
Improve my jumping ( ie jump with out clenching my buttocks and holding my breath ok not really but you get the idea!)
I’d love a BPW trip!
Go to GNAR Bike park!
Survive Ard rock
Keep saving for my new bike!
My main goal is to ride my bike.
It’s been a shit year. Hopefully 2018 will be better, I’m already looking forward to the summer alps trip.
Adapt back to UK conditions after 6 years out
This post made me think a bit. Seems like only a while ago your posts were about moving to oz, then they were about being in oz then they were about personal changes now you seem to be coming back.
Made me realise how much fitter I was six years ago, and how that really doesn’t seem a long time ago!
Just to actually get out and ride. Other than commuting I can count the rides I’ve had this year on one hand. A sad state of affairs that needs rectifying. Hopefully get out regularly, improve fitness and start to save for a mountain bike. My dream would be a nice short travel full sus. A Cotic Flare or something similar.
Get fit enough to not make a fool of myself at Ard Rock.
Ummmm there's a question. I don't really know. This year I did a week in Andalusia, sdw, xc races, road crit racing, so I honestly can't think what else to put on the list. I can't see me passing this year's miles, well, Kms, I'm going to top 8000 this year.
My riding is hampered a bit by my lad playing football at weekends.
My target is more a weight thing this year. Plan is to get to sub 90kg.
Ride more and when I do leave the gps at home so no strava timing.
Get faster going up.
2017/18 CX Nationals in January - top 50% of vet field.
Tour of Cambridge - not crash, and qualify for the World's in Varese.
Varese UCI Gran Fondo (as above) as part of a riding holiday in the area.
Go sub 23min at my club weekly 10mile TT (Weston on the Green airfield circuit).
6000 miles a year (will hit that today for 2017).
Podium placing at a Central CX League round.
(still considering) Masters CX Worlds in Mol, Belgium (the course is nearly 50% running and I don't run, so I either commit and learn or wait 'til the Worlds gets moved to a different course!).
Ride the MTB more.
1. Less emphasis on Strava, more on laughter
2. Ride Rotorua (booked)
3. Maybe revisit Bali
I’ve entered the Tour du Mont Blanc so will be doing a lot of road riding leading up to that.
I might do the Manx100, but it is the week after the TdMB, so I’m not sure.
Then probably Manx End2End.
Stop looking at bikes on the internet and ride the one(s) I have.
I'd like to explore more of the lake district and generally get more confident with technical descents/drops. I also fancy trying the hebridean way at some point soon.
* Maintain energy level balance between cycling (daily commutes) and 1 year old son and other forms of exercise.
* Get out of local area more often to ride actual trails rather than just farm tracks.
* Bunny hop > 50cm on hardtail.
* Continue finding obstacles in local urban environment to practice techie-ish skills.
* Try and learn a few other tricks/skills like fakie, trackstand, manual, etc
Ride more (10k km?).
Ride a 200k audax
Coast to coast to coast in Devon.
Top 10 in CX at Escot instead of being full of cold.
100 mile MTB around Dartmoor
Plan racing better.
Do some audax.
Race more cross.
1, 5-day road ride across the alps
2, Ride around Luxembourg in 1 or 2 days
3, Tick off 8000km riding (not a lot for some people, a lot for me)
4, Get the MTB riding going again now there's a bike park by my office
5, Go down to Lac Blanc with the MTB at least once
6, Do my first 200km (been close to it before) and first 200 mile in one day
Ride bike, enjoy it, rides some more.
After buying my first house and having my first child over the summer my riding all but finished in July this year. From tomorrow i have a few realistic goals;
Ride 1000 miles in the year
Ride the Welsh Velothon
Ride in Morzine again
Enter another round of Enduro
It'll be interesting to come back to this is 12 months and see how far I got.
Ditch the stabalisers and pull a wheelie.
2017 was first full year living in the Quantocks, and never left them (not that that's such a bad thing), so...
1. Ride more in Exmoor
2. Ride a loop in Dartmoor
and
3. a 50 miler on the mtb
4. Nail that poxy 'steep turns' trail on the Qs that I kept fudging up.
5. Help the eldest boy to learn to ride his bike.
6. Day in the Brecons.
7. Make more of the generous flexi policy at work and book off a day a month for a big ride.
Get discharged by orthopaedic consultant hopefully mid-Jan, continue working with physio to be back on the bike by Spring, leave work on 6 Apr 2018 for good and ride my bike a lot 🙂
3000 miles
Learn to wheelie
Race again
