Just as hard to call as the men's.

Harder actually as there's much less chance to see the women in action normally, so I know less about them.

Spirited ride from the other Dutch lass.

Oh. I see! I stand partially corrected then!

Completely corrected. The e at the end is pronounced in Flemish, Dutch and German 🙂

Trying to keep up to date on BBC live text, if someone could do the same on here it'd be much appreciated, otherwise I'll probably get one more before the finish....

This is a similar scenario to yesterday with Majka. Wonder if Mara Abbot can hang on to this, she properly deserves it.

I wouldn't want to be the winner after that.
Here's hoping it's just a broken collar bone, but it looked incredibly serious. 😥

I'm concerned. She wasn't moving, was head down in the gutter and they haven't showed a replay. That's a bad sign. It was a full otb. I hope she's OK.

That was a nasty one, fingers crossed that it's not too serious as I'm not sure help was that close at hand either. Not good. Even yesterday's crash for nibali was awful.

She's looking strong still

Got no faith in those on screen time gaps though.

I expect she'll get caught. The women behind should be fresher than the men were

Do you go full gas and risk blowing up, or with the info from the car measure it a bit to eke your lead out?

it's another where if the Dutch girl hadn't crashed they'd have been nailed on for G&S

That course has claimed a lot of victims.

Hopefully all just broken bones, but still that's a lot of riders' years over.

Safety in pro cycling is ridiculous. I can think of one death, at least one brain death this year, and at least two other life changing injuries. That descent should never have been on the course.

Even just haybales on the outside of the corners would have provided a barrier to those huge kerbs, and given the width of those gutters wouldn't have narrowed the actual road surface much.

Better safety measures in the Red Bull soapbox derby.

Twitter feeds saying Van Vleuten conscious so hopefully good news - was left feeling sick after that. Great race otherwise - feel so bad for the American but that's what makes this a great sport.

Still got the feed running here, the announcer was just talking about someone being conscious now, so hopefully that's a good sign

so what that race tells us is that if the yank lass had risked more "life and limb" in the decent she would have won gold, a new low for the olympics. I'm out.

That's a bad crash, she landed very heavily on the kerb with her spine taking the full impact then no movement from her, even by the time the chasing group had passed the scene. I so hope there is good news soon

Always worrying when they don't show a replay, but it sounds like she's conscious at least. Horrible endo. Great race overall though, as with the men.

The lack of any sort of crash protection on those kerbs and gutters is criminal. Would have been so easy to mitigate against that. as boardman said, if you came off on that descent, you had no chance of finishing the race.

On a related note, i thought boardman was excellent.

I saw a bit of the road cycling but there was over 100k to go and didn't fancy waiting around that long!
