Mudguards?

Safety - you look at the actual bike and it's got some proper steel guards so if the rider behind actually bumps their front tyre into the derny it just bounces harmlessly off the guard.

The dernys at Manchester all have scuff marks up the back of their guards. 🙂

The poor Italians, that one just fell to pieces. It's heartbreaking to see 2 teammates disappearing up the track and you can't do a thing about it.

Their kit hasn't held up well in the crotch area!
Amazing ride again. Shame they don't have a mixed event, Trott and Kenny would smash all.

Fair play for the US team, do or die stuff. They must have known GB would smash it again.

Team GB on Campag rears, but unbranded fronts. Trispoke for the keirin, for example.

Anyone know who's making them?

Phenomenal acceleration down the straight and going the long way round but it can't have been more than a fraction of a tyre between her and Meares for Silver/Bronze.

Edit: result says 5/1000ths of a second!

See also Kenny/Trott

Could we perhaps start a breeding program between their respective offspring?

Those GB tracksuits are thoroughly awful. 🙁
Canada and USA both look really smart on the podium, GB look like they've been dressed in a brightly coloured bin bag.

Skinner on fire. Absolutely caning the opposition all week.

Re tracksuits, I'm just about ok with the GB one but thought the USA kit had some kind if cosmonaut arms.

Anyone know why the American's aren't bothered on the men's side? Their men's track team is two blokes, neither of whom look like they will be competitive.
Seems odd that they can't get a serious team together.

Great photo of Chris Hoy holding up a young Callum Skinner on Edinburgh track. Skinner is looking like a worthy replacement. Awesome.

But the Ladies keirin was my pick of the medals. Such a great event. Every one I've ridden, I've been trashed, but so much fun.

According to some tweets by someone called Caley Fretz, there is no guaranteed funding for the US Olympic cycling team, all sponsorship. Not sure if this applies to the other sports. Hence the US women's team pursuit has one permanent member of coaching staff and that is about it. British Cycling has an enormous budget via the National Lottery etc.

Struck me as very amusing that the US saw themselves as underdogs! God knows how this country managed to invest in something and get results, never usually happens!

Yeah the US track programme is run on a shoestring apparently. They were definitely the underdogs.

Was anyone else surprised that Laura Trott only has three Olympic golds after last night's win?

Hopefully four after the Omnium.

Sports programmes in the US are run in a weird way and besides, US only has one indoor velodrome (Los Angeles) - there are another couple of dozen outdoor (or partially shielded) tracks built to a wide variety of standards, most are strange distances like 333.3 metres. Also, track cycling itself is very under-the-radar compared to sports like baseball and basketball.

The UK now has 5 international standard indoor velodromes so it's far easier to identify talent from a young age.

Interesting then how the US structure works - suspect lack of central funding is offset by a massive amount of investment in college sports etc., hence swimming and T&F dominance.

Even sprinting exceeds the attention span required for baseball or basketball.

0.003 seconds faster than the old Olympic Record set by Victoria Pendleton in London.

So - the incident in the women's Keirin where the Dutch girl rode the advertising boards having been forced all the way from the inside line to the top of the bank by the French girl, taking two others out badly in the process..... It looks like a deliberate act on the part of the French rider, but I've seen no suggestion of this (not looked that hard admittedly...) - what am I missing?

Dutch girl was in a shit position and boxed in by Hong Kong. She leant inwards, French girl pushed back (which is natural when leant into), went off balance as the Dutch girl went with her rather than leaning back and that off-balance carried her up the track.

You know when you think there's an extra step in a staircase and fall forwards? Bit like that.

Spain behind got caught up in it and went down immediately (front wheel taken out by the back wheel of the French girl), NZ went down as a result of the final rider kicking back to avoid it all.

Certainly not deliberate because 99% of the time if you did that deliberately you'd all fall off together!

Brilliant so far, you can feel the tension! First little dig now. Looks pretty smooth but they're going at a fair old rate, 50-ish kph. Nicely tactical.
