Thinking about this for a post winter project kind of thing for the boy.

I'm thinking he's got somewhere between 6 and 12 months left on his Specialized before he outgrows it and it may be nice as a project for me and him to build his new bike together instead of just buying it.

i personally wouldn't pay  (at least) 600 quid for a four year old carbon frame without knowing far more about the condition, the history and things like the shock service etc.  I would want to give it a full inspection before buying, which you may well be able to do.

I would spend that on a more modern aluminium frame . But i think the project idea sounds great and i can't wait to do that with my kids. Top daddin'

edit also if it has an Akros headset that will probbly need replacing as they were known to creak. it is also PF BB i think, which i'm not that against, but it ain't as simple as good old screw in 24mm shimano standard. I had a pf on my YT tues 2016 and i replaced it with a very good, but very expensive hope jobby.

I agree on the PFBB but his current FSR has one and has been sweet. So i've changed my mind a little bit on them.
The problem at the moment is supply and demand in the CV19 world.... So maybe i just wait till mid next year and see what comes about etc... I just thought this looked like it'd suit his needs.

I know to some it may seem excessive, but he is very jumpy and DH orientated as a rider.

I don't think that's excessive, you should see some of the rigs the kids turn up to Rogate with!  I wonder where the parents get the money tbh.

we're heading down there in the next few weekends actually, i've not ridden it yet.

He deserves a better bike than me though i could argue 😀

i don't think it is overkill at all, my boy rides DH here in Sweden and is only 8.

i'm just not sure that is the best way to spend your money that's all.   I don't know enough about that specific frame, the condition etc, but i imagine you would factor in a shock service /tune, postage plus asking price it's gonna be around 800 quid all in? i remember a few months ago new commencal meta 27 frame (without shock) was going for 700 euros, for example.

PF has always been fine for me too

I'm more than happy to hear other ideas.... This one now seems to be off the list anyway as we want a boost back end as we've got Pro4's in his Specialized running 148*12, so for ease it would make sense to stick with boost as we've got 3 sets of boost wheels in our bikes.

There's no hurry at all on this, his current bike will do him fine until the middle of next year easy... Was just an idea really for winter.

They are great bikes for all round riding, I had a 2015 Capra CF LE and really regret selling it last year. The headset bearings are really easy to service, as are the bottom bracket as long as there's no wear in the shell itself - I swapped mine out for a Hope in the end.

The frame bearings can be a bugger to change too if they've never been done so worth asking as they make such a difference to the ride. Check that the rear shock has been serviced too as the Monarch Plus (if that's what it is) had an annoying "knock" sometimes.

Great bike though, he'll love it and £600 for a carbon frame doesn't seem too bad in these current times...

Edit: just looked at that ebay listing - I'd be a bit wary of that wear on the seat tube, it looks like it may have gone through the lacquer to the superficial carbon layers. I'm not sure how's he done that?

Loved Mine, think we rode together in Morzine 4 years ago this August not long after id got it .. Yellow Cf Be a great bike for a young un .. mines went off to retirement with a friends lad who only rides Aston hill and the like - All the issues covered off in the post before me re bearing and pressfit . Id wants to inspect it thoroughly before buying for any cracks though .. If you do buy it Ive a spare Monarch Plus from a friends Capra that developed the knock you can have for parts just in case - your choices for Shock might be limited if it goes - think its a bit of an odd size

The downsides of a Capra are probably not a huge issues to a youngster who wants to do DH and jumpy stuff, i doubt he'll get taking it to the hills and getting annoyed with pedal bob and so on, apart from that it's a pretty standard 4 bar design, works well and with an air shock should be good for a youngster, as you've seen it is the old 142 standard, but you'll find boost standard frames out there similar, there are so many of this type now, with not many being poor at doing the job.

I'd keep an eye on pinkbike and facebook marketplace, loads come up, for what your lad does, he could easily love jumping on a capra, nukeproof mega, commencal meta, bird am160, etc.

we’re heading down there in the next few weekends actually, i’ve not ridden it yet.

Your lad will love it, and there's plenty of progression for the Dads.  Great for jumping confidence as everything is so well built, so long as you have the speed/balls then happy days.

There also tends to be loads of good kids sending it huge too.
