Has anyone bought one of these yet? Experiences? They look pretty sorted. Do they sell frames alone?
I'm looking at the granite chief myself seem like a lot of bike for the money.
The uk rep is based in wiltshire and is very helpful and quick to reply. He has offered to let me have a go on his granite chief before I buy one.
I bought a '14 Granite chief, had a good experience buying from Rose.
I hardly ride mine though, as I'm a hardtail man at heart. Impulse buy now gathering dust!! Can't be beat for value, even upgraded to full XT and pikes it still was under half the price of equivalent orange.
I really fancied the granite chief or uncle jimbo this year, but the frame sizes (too short for me on reach/length) weren't right.
Revmatt, why not offer your Granite Chief to bentiggerwyles?
I have a 2013 XL root miller frame I'd sell, if you're interested. Great bike just took parts off to build up a hardtail for fun. Would love to build it up again but shed overflowing. I won't be able to resist this at some point if I don't sell it.
Good climber with monarch in pedal, and a blast downhill with all fully open. I'm sure the 2015 will be even better. I've done a lot of big days ( 70k Mount Keen and the like) with the Rose and it's a fine all rounder. I did as much reading about it before I bought as I could, using google translate mosty, and found good reviews. The best was one which translated to something like "plenty of room for large rear sandwiches". This clinched the deal for me.
I received an Uncle Jimbo this Christmas, I've ridden it 4-5 times and really enjoying it so far. I went for the Uncle Jimbo 2, with pike, monarch plus rc3, SRAM guide rsc brakes, x01 drivetrain and DT swiss ex1501 wheels. all for a bargain price of £2,600. the orange equivalent Alpine 160 is £4,200 for arguably a worse spec.
The bike was delivered a month earlier than quoted and I could change the spec of anything until the build date.
The frame warranty was 10 years when I bought mine, I believe it has dropped to 5 years. it is still more than most bike manufacturers.
How does your uncle jimbo pedal I'm torn between one of them and the granite chief, also is that a large?
I had a 2010 commencal meta 55 previously, the uncle jimbo pedals much nicer than the meta, there is very little / no pedal bob and the steep seat angle keeps you in the right position. I got the dual position pikes but to be honest the pedal position is good enough to not need them.
I was struggling to decide between the Jimbo or the granite chief, went with the Jimbo as I figured the weight was going to be about the same and it fitted better with my local riding (lake district).
It is a large, I'm 5'11" and it feels OK size wise, the steep seat angle makes the top tube feel shorter than I thought it would but its fine for me with a 50mm stem. If you're much taller than me an xl would probably suit.
thanks for your input im 5"11-6ftand was thinking between medium or large so large it is, the weights do look very similar so still undecided!! arrrrrhhh
What type of bottom bracket does it have Neb?
My 2010 (?) Granite Chief has one of the bloody awful pf30 adapter jobbies.
From squinting at some of the photos it looks like the new ones might have too 🙁
I think it is a pf30 bottom bracket. I went with the e13 trsr chainset, I didn't realise it had its own standard of bottom bracket.. So double bugger!
Random question Neb but what's your saddle rail height to the centre BB? I'd like a Large for TT length but not sure I've got the leg for it with a reverb fitted!
Cheers
Not sure off the top of my head... But I'm 5'11" with a 33" inseam (i think!) I'm using a 125mm reverb with probably about 25mm of the post showing, I nearly went with a 150mm reverb but thought it was a bit close to call whether It'd fit...
Out of interest at 6ft with a 35mm stem would you go with a L or Xl?
Thanks Neb,
Randomly Rose have done some lurking in the bushes 😆 and seen my post and emailed to say that it should be doable with a 125mm reverb.
Good service! They look awesome as well, I built one on line all the spec I wanted for about 2.2k! lovely
frosty, I've got the saddle pushed right back and the reach while seated is fine with a 50mm stem. if you're dropping to a 35mm stem then you'd probably appreciate the 20mm longer top tube of the XL frame. not sure how that would affect your standover or reach when stood up tho.
they are cracking value bikes Phil. which colour frame did you get? I struggled to decide, be interested to see what the black ano looks like in the flesh.
How's the Root Miller order going on? Mine was down to 5 weeks but has been bumped back up to 10!
My local riding mates are sponsored by Rose so I've been seeing quite a bit of their bikes recently. I haven't ridden one properly because of the euro brake setup but have had a bounce and spoken to them about them. Bikes are nice, a bit agricultural but nice looking. Seem pretty well thought out. The build spec for the price is amazing, over here at least. Suspension seems pretty active. Bikes are a little bit heavy, not scaled them yet so I'd just have to say a little heavy but not stupidly so. They are loving their bikes. So much so that a few non-sponsored mates have bought them too as second bikes. So far those comments relate to the Unchained DH bike and the enduro one, something chief. They are waiting for delivery of the 29er. Certainly not slowed those guys down at all, mores the pity!
I guess it must be a delay for all the 29ers then. I've emailed to ask what the crack is so I'll see what they say. If it keeps getting delayed I might just have to get something else unfortunately.
Hi Neb. I am about 6'2 / 6'3 and I have ordered XL Uncle Jimbo. I will be running a 40mm stem. From your previous post you recommend the XL if you are taller than yourself. Do you think the sizing will be okay. Thanks
Nice looking bike Neb, any idea what it weighs please.
Ajh8 it weighs just under 30lbs, the uncle jumbo 3 with fox 36 + floatx and mavic wheels + tyres weighs 1 lb more and costs £400 more!
Got a 2014 Chief last year. Whole buying experience was excellent and had a good test ride with Finlay the UK manager at Ashton court. Love the bike, rides great, well put together and certainly not heavy for what it is.
Had problems with the rear Monarch and the Reverb (not Roses fault) and they replaced the standard Monarch with a Debonair and the Reverb with a KS Lev (which I requested as I didn't like the Reverb). Both completely free and fast.
