Hey all,

I haven't posted in here in ages! Due to a variety of reasons in the past 3-4 years I havent had the chance to get out but I am now at a time I can. Digging out my ageing Lapierre Spicy I have got the bug to replace the frame.

I am looking at a 2013 Transition Covert CF. The seller has sold the original Fox CTD shock but has offered me a Rockshox Monarch Debonair Plus in its place.

I have read that these frames have a high leverage ratio and some people have struggled with regularly CTD's blowing through travel and feeling too linear and dead. Will the Monarch be any good? I understand shock 'tunes' are very specific to different frames and I dont want to put on a shock from a completely different frame. My budget is not massive so buying a new shock is not really an option for me.

Likewise, does any have the 4 digit code from a CTD from their Covert? I have a CTD on my Spicy I could retune and use.

Any help is appreciated!

Doug

I had a 2013 Covert 29 that originally came with the Fox CTD. It did indeed blow through the travel. I eventually got it Push tuned by TF Tuned which improved it considerably as a shock, but it didn't really solve the blowing through the travel problem...it was slightly better but not perfect.

Apparently the Covert linkage is quite regressive so you really need a shock that is very progressive to counter that. Don't get me wrong, it was a stonking bike, I loved it, but it was just one of those personal things where I wanted a bit more feedback from the rear suspension in it's last quarter or so of rear travel just to give me that feeling the rear end was biting and supporting...it never really delivered with the Fox shock.

So not sure how the Debonair air spring compares to the Fox one in terms of its progressive nature. I can't imagine it would be worse.

I was very close to buying a covert back then but ended up with a Spicy - if I remember right, the Covert has a 200mm shock versus the Spicy's 216mm - so there's more than a retune needed, I would think (the short shock had a lot to do with the high leverage ratio)

Most modern shocks can be made a lot more progressive with volume spacers - I fitted one to the spicy which completely stopped it bottoming out for me.  The Debonair is a good shock, I know big heavy guys who have had zero issues with bottom out on them, so I would expect it will do a fine job for you.

Thanks for the reply gents, useful to know! I think the earlier Coverts (2011/12) has 200x57 shocks but the 2013 has a 216x63 which is the same as my Spicy. If I am honest I am edging towards the Debonair for something different. Ive had a variety of Fox shocks and although they arnt bad out of the box they often they feel a bit lacking.
