In my search for a 26" frame I have been offered a Scott Genius which I think is the last of the 26"ers, by a friend of a friend. I know nothing about them and nobody I know seems to have one so am in the dark about long term expectations. What do people think? Subject to price negotiation is this a reasonable option for a do-it-all bike? Or am I letting myself in for trouble?
I ran this v2 genius for a few years. Loved the bike. Found it super capable and a lot of fun to ride. Fast up and as fast as I could ride it down on whistler/Squamish trails.
The equalizer pull shock is the bikes weak link although of our guiding fleet over the 3 seasons we ran this bike we only had maybe 3 shock rebuilds. Only other issue I remember was the cable guide (shock/rear brake/rear mech cables) on one of our busiest guides bikes came unstuck but that resulted in a warranty replaced front triangle.
Scott specced the bike with a 150mm talas and in carbon flavour it was the lightest 150mm frame available at launch.
Bike is only 1.125" straight steerer so your upgrade/replacement options are limited from a fork perspective.
Aside from that, good option IF its available at the right price AND the shocks been serviced.Quick way to check shock issues if if you see any shock shaft exposed with bike unloaded. I.e. if it appears to be sagged when your not sat on the bike.
Bearings are standard parts, its the hardware that's expensive to replace.
I enjoyed riding mine
Is it possible to use another brand of shock or does the system limit you to Scott original which I understand is DT Swiss?
Correct. Its a pull shock so standard options don't work. Fox build a pull shock for cannondale but I doubt its an option.
Hi
I used to have a carbon genius of this vintage, just echo what bearback said, fantastic bike ..... When the shock is working! Found I had to send my shock off to pace every 5-6 months due to symptoms described above, got fed up in the end and moved on.
