I'm not a particularly accomplished rider & never thought I'd find myself contemplating "small bump response" 😕 But my 2011 (Cash)ima 36 Talas forks dont respond well to small bumps or "washboard" type of surfaces. Everything gets transmitted up through the handlebars & is becoming tiresome. Everywhere else they're great & I'm otherwise pretty happy with them.
Has anyone converted either to Float spec by removing the Talas system or converted to coil spring ? I'd be interested to hear what difference it made.
D.
Take it you had them for a while, might need wearing in. Also, have you been through adjustment?
Yup well bedded in. I've dropped the pressure from 75 to 55 PSI & am running more sag than I should be. The compression damping's backed right off.
I'll call Mojo & see what they've got to offer.
Cheers, D.
Let me know how you get on, I'm having the same issues but mine are still pretty new.
same here, not a huge difference from my 2006 forks even with kashima, FIT etc. i assume the floats are no different?
probably should have bought BOS
just sayin.
Sticky forks usually means dry seals, do you turn the bike pre-ride to allow some oil to get to the foam rings?
I have 2011 36 talas rlc and mine seem fine, they were a bit sticky when brand new but now they've worn in they feel good.
I turn them upside down between rides, and spray a bit of teflon lube on the stantions, seems to keep them smooth.
I've got 2011 36 Talas RLC (regular coating, not magical unicorn goo) and there is a fair bit of stiction and small bump not brilliant, but on the whole they're good. Took a lot of tweaking air pressure and LSC to get them to where they are, but I'm happy with them.
That said.. the travel adjust is really handy on long climbs. If it wasn't for that, I'd have them converted to Floats as there is a significant difference.
I've fitted the new 2012 SKF seals to 2011 FiT Floats. Would say it is better on the high speed small stuff (which is what they claim). Worth a try.

I've had the seals up twice & cleaned/re-lubed the foams.

Upside down prior to the next days riding. No differnce 😥

I tried not using the TALAS last time at Golspie. I can manage without it, nae bother.

Might be worth a punt before I get the hammer out. Where do I get the SKF magic seals ?
TIA, Dave.
Where do you have the rebound set?
Reason I ask is when I got my FOX forks I ran them with a really quick rebound for ages because that was what i'd been advised/read. Over the summer of riding i've gradually slowed them down more and more.. now running either 1 or 2 clicks from full slow and I find the small bump response much better- i've not noticed the forks packing down on repeated hits.. obviously YMMV but worth having a play with, its made me much happier with mine.

I'd put a spring in rather than convert to floats if you don't need travel adjust.
Dave when did you last do a lower leg service? or have they always been like this?

Can't say defacto, as I'm nowhere near the bike. From memory it's roughly midway. It's definitely nowhwere near the firmer end of the adjustment.

I'm contemplating this but would like to try a set of coil forks first. ISTR it's a one way process. The coil spring causes (normal) wear inside the leg which means the TALAS system won't function if you put it back again.

Never done a lower leg service as the forks are only a year old. The seals have been up twice to re-lube the foam rings. They've bedded in a lot since I bought them. Moving the forks whilst stationary they feel great. No hint of stiction. You can try it out next time you're round. Absolutely fine on everything else I'm capable of riding 😳
D.
Noticed an improvement with the 2012 SKF seals on a 2011 F120 so worth a try maybe?
A lower leg service should have been done a while ago so I'd say to sort it, do a lower leg service and lob in some new SKF slow friction seals
Yep do a lower leg service. You should be doing this 3-4 times a year conditions dependant. Its dead easy once you get the hang of it and will only take 15mins once your familiar with the process and will save you getting worn stanchions. Fox fork seem to come from the factory with the absolute min fluids and as you ride these fluids are slowly lost. Doing the lower leg service let's you replace these lost fluids, as opposed to just lifting the seals which only cleans the seals. Simply lifting the seals isn't really the way to do it also cos its to easy to damage stuff when your prising them out. Have a look on Mojo's site think there's a tutorial movie showing you how to do it.
I bought some 36Talas new in 09 and although I didn't like to admit it they weren't good over the small stuff.
Loco has just turned them into Floats with new SKF seals. Much better and easier to home service too.
If yours are 12months old then they need a proper service or you will mark your stanchions.

Good advice both, thank you.
I'll get onto it ASAP.
Many thanks, Dave.
I remember my ones Locked out and they was only the r's
