Hi there, I'm looking at buying a Talas 36 but see that it doesn't have a lockout. That's ok, because I I'm not too bothered about turning lockout on and off constantly on the trails, but unfortunately I use my bike for commuting too and would like it locked out for that.
I don't have any experience with air forks (only coils), nor with Fox forks, so would be very appreciative if any Talas 36 owners could help me out! Is it possible to effectively lockout the fork by putting the air pressure very high (within spec!), or perhaps by turning the compression dials to max on the RC2? I know that the Magura Thor, which I'm also looking at, is pretty much locked out with the compression dial set to max.
Note I'm looking at the 2010 or earlier model, not the new one with lockout, because I want 100-130-160mm and run it at 130 most of the time.
Cheers,
Andy
Hi Andy,
you can pretty much achieve what you're looking to do with the low speed compression on any fork, assuming that the range of compression is wide enough for this purpose. With all the LSC wound on to a Talas 36 the fork will feel very stiff under pedaling, but it would not be 'locked out' in a strict sense of that word. However most lockouts work in a similar way, using the low speed compression to effectively resitrict all the oil movement that then prevents the fork from moving. There will still be some movement but not enough to cause you a problem.
Here's the important bit though.
Freeborn are selling 2010 Tala 36s (I think the RC2 version) in both normal and tapered steerer for £580 new!
Call James or Paul on 01403 251 252.
Just buy the Thor's, they are a couple of pounds lighter and come with a lock-out - struggling to think about the kinda bike you'd commute on and would fit 36's - plus it would make it a thief magnet.
Its a On-one 456, I just replaced a P7 frame with it as I finally decided the P7 was a bit large and I'm eyeing up a 456Ti as a future purchase. It won't actually increase the weight of my bike, as its got a Tora 302 on atm.
10 years in West London and I've only had a bike stolen once, and that was in bright daylight with no sign of a broken lock so I reckon I accidentally didn't lock it to anything, duh. You do have a point though b r, at some point I probably should get a 2nd beater bike for commuting!
Many thanks for the info geetee1972. I think I'll look for 2nd hand atm though as I may decide its ott for the bike...
There was a chap called Convert on here a few days back looking to sell an almost new ti456.
I just bought a second hand one myself and it's amazing. Utterly utterly brilliant.
