had to cut my ride very short around Kirroughtree today, due to the fact that the forks where making a loud clunking noise whilst traversing the "Rocky Road" section, felt like there was no suspension on the front end at all, also discovered when I stopped at the fireroad that the Lock out wasn't working either....Hmmmm.... some tinterweb reading for me when I got back home.... it sounds like a motion control service kit is in order....I looked at TF Tuned as they have a kit for 20 squid..... but I am unsure of what the thick black plastic type washer thingys are for (or are they for a different model of Rockshox forks?, please see attached pic)

the above pic is for the 09 model of Reba and others... the next pic is from J E James cycles and the kit is for the 08 Reba forks.....I can't see any bloody difference, can you??

Thick washer is the bottom out bumper.... Sits at the bottom of the fork leg (one inside each lower tube) and provides a bump stop for the lower face of the stanchion tube.

Doubt that there is much difference between the two kits to be honest! Most seals / o rings etc are common across many models and years.

I think I used an 09 kit on my 2012 rebas with no drama (blackbox so had a few more o rings and an extra circlip for damping side)

If lockout not working then most prob all the damping oil has escaped into lower leg.... And hence loss of travel as the stanchion can't move through the oil. Common (very) problem. I measured up the lower leg o ring and purchased about 10 from a supplier online as these were always the first to fail (can't remember size as no longer run Rockshox as got fed up of poor reliability)

Hey!

We've just had a great ride at kirroughtree- can you recall the three riders from Yorkshire?

What a great place it is! I'm afraid I can't comment on your forks- good luck with getting them fixed.

Let us know how you get on/what exactly the issue was.

I rebuilt my 2007/8 Reba dual air SLs (presumably same as yours internally) using "off the shelf" industrial seals from a guy on eBay to fix lockout and stop a leak from lockout knob in 2016.  However the problem has now returned and I hope to strip/rebuild before the Exmoor MTB marathon.

I am unsure as as to the year of the forks, 08 or 09 .....must admit this is the first time that this problem has manifested itself...lets hope and pray that a full service on both legs will sort it out. 🙂

have you read this over at another forum.....   https://www.bikeradar.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=12652233

Motion control seal head has failed. You'll find all the damping oil in the lower leg on that side.

It restricts the travel on the fork and nerfs the damping simultaneously. The knock is your damper topping out because there's no fluid to stop it.

Best to take the opportunity to do a full service. You'll need damping oil anyway.

As mentioned earlier... the motion control seal had failed.... I stripped the forks down and serviced the Motion control as well as the dual air, renewed all seals and whatnoughts....., even applied SRAM butter to the Bushings in the lower legs (as the stanchions were showing some wear cos the bushings were dry...),  all is working fine now... (time will tell....LOL...)

thanks to all who replied.... cheers.... 🙂

I bought the service kit from Bikegoo... they are sold out... here is an alternative link
