Hi , i fancy building up a light 5 spot and someone is selling one, 2005 in average condition . i.e no damage but needs a respray.

They are asking £330. Is it worth that? I was thinking about £275?

Cheers 🙂

What Shock and has it had new bushes/bearings?

Bush kit is around £85, so if there is a hint of play anywhere you have negotiating point.

at last, a question i can properly answer!

i recently bought a 2004 (Horst Link) 5-spot frame through the classifieds here. i paid £270.00 for it. I'm not sure that I would pay more than this for a 2005 TNT link version.

the frame needed repainting, but the bearings were good. the shock was also a rp23.

my expenditure on the frame is now somewhat more and includes:-

powdercoat in RAL6027 'light green'
new metal headtube badge (bought from CRC)
new zerts (bought from Silverfish)
new downtube decals (bought from Silverfish)
new RP23 Kashima shock (bought from CRC)
Hope headset and seat collar
modified Turner chainstay protector (actually sent foc from Turner in the states)

the end result is pretty shiny though:-

Is it HL or TNT? I think that was the year of change. My late 2005 6 pack is HL.

My 2005 was Horst link. TNT didn't turn up till 2006. Price wise I would have said £330 is alright as this was around a £1500-1700 frame remember but if campfreddie got his for £270 then that's a definite bargain. Of course try and knock them down. For one in good nick I would pay around the £350-£375 mark so argue the point that a good spray job plus decals and postage will easy skin you over £100

Considering what Halifax Filing Cabinets sell for, that's a good price.

Nice respray that.

That price seems pretty reasonable if the pivots and shock are fine. One thing I would say is that with stock valving, the fox RP can make the HL blow through its mid travel and make it feel like a dog dragging its arse on the ground just riding along. It can make it feel like the back end is heavy and not running free.

Despite this It's a great bike. I ran my 2005 from new up to nearly 2012 before bending it (and me) in a big crash which mostly killed it, but I'd probably be running it now otherwise.

Here it is in big mountain, big miles mode, sometime in 2008

[IMG] [/IMG] it eventually ended up in this spec:

I should clarify. My chainstay broke about 6 months prior to me crashing. Turner had no replacement parts for a frame of that age, but STW came good. Thus, when I crashed, it was not viable to be directly replaced, hence the newer DW one.

Lovely bikes. My late 05 HL still runs fine but a good shock is a must. Pivots last for ages if looked after. Now have a TNT 5 Spot, a HL 5 Spot and a XCE in the house, and no bother from any of them.

mine 'could' be for sale.... the standover is a little tight for the wife (she's 5'2") even though the frame is an small size (recommended size is 5'3" and the quoted standover is 30" which is actually quite high).

the spec at the moment is:-

* frame as you have seen with the brand new kashima rp23 (correct tune for the horst link 5-spot)
* hope headset and seat collar
* ks i7 supernatural remote dropper post (brand new)
* fi'z'ik arione donna saddle (brand new)
* thomson stem
* fsa carbon pro riser bars
* dt swiss exm130 forks
* 2013 xt clutch rear mech (brand new)
* 2013 slx 2x10 chainset (170m cranks) (brand new)
* 2013 slx 12-36 cassette, SLX front mech and shifters (brand new)
* hope pro3 sp xc3 hubs on ztr355 rims (sub 1,500g!!!)
* hope saw 185mm front disc and 160mm rear disc
* formula rx hydraulics (brand new)
* superstar 9mm & 10mm bolt through QRs with Hope hub converters (brand new)
* schwalbe rocket ron / racing ralph evo pacestar tyres (brand new)
* tubeless valves and tubeless rim strip

i got a 'little' bit carried away putting the build together... it's basically set up as a very fast, very light 5" trail bike for smaller, lighter riders.

photo below without the dropper post (now fitted) and with silly long brake cables (currently at lbs having the hoses shortened)... the bike hasn't yet turned a wheel under pedal power.

re. the shock... the horst link frames do not require the special low speed tune that the dw link versions need. this makes it much easier to by a replacement shock off the shelf.

edit... just looked through my emails from Turner in the states (they have helped me out lots in the last few weeks)

Greg @ Turner says:-

"Back in 2004 we were transitioning from a Romic coil to the Fox air shock.

The medium/medium tune will work well on your frame."

Personaly I like the DHX5 coils on both my 04 5spot & 05 6pack, the original Romic coil was also good on the Spot. I tried an RP23 on the Spot but didn't like it, it just felt lifeless & harsh to me after the coil, but I guess it's all personal preferance.

HL frames have the pivot nearest the drop out on the chainstay, TNT frames have the pivot nearest the drop out on the seatstay

through some very canny shopping about (on the new parts and nearly new parts) the build stands me in (complete with pedals which are A530 SPDs which will very shortly be customised to include pedal pins on the flat side) at circa £1,700.

it's taken weeks and weeks of research, buying bits, going backwards and forwards to the powdercoater, long evenings with the dremel removing the powdercoat from the bearing facings etc etc.

i'm not selling for a loss... put it that way. lol (i actually already have a mate who will take it at £1,700, hence not putting it in the classifieds, but he's a bloke (a short one mind) and i built this for someone who doesn't have a willy, so would love it to go to someone who doesn't have a willy (with it being international womans day and all) lol

in any respect, i hope it gives you some inspiration and i'm very happy to give you any pointers if you take on the other frame as a project... there's lots i wish i knew at the outset!

crikey, thats out of my budget im afraid - im going to try and build for under £1k , mostly second hand . But it certainly has inspired me and i may just take you up on the offer of advice! 🙄

no worries... the original plan was to build it up using bits from a giant talon 3w i built for her which would have left me well under £1k, but then i just got a bit obsessed.

* in terms of fork choice... if you are not concerned too much about weight, the rock shox pike is THE fork for the HL 5-spot. you ideally want to be running at 130mm, so a pair of shimmed down RS Revs should work well (or a pair of Fox 32 RL 130's if you like servicing them every 2 minutes). the dt swiss jobbies are awesome with a very long service interval.

* the seatpost is a 27.2mm which limits your choices if you want to go down the dropper route (i went for the ks i7).

* the powdercoating process is complicated if you are thinking of painting the rear triangle (which was traditionally raw alloy) as nothing will go back together again unless you spend lots of time grinding the paint from the various bearing surfaces (worth the effort though!)

* it's worth replacing the zerts when you rebuild the frame. they are push fit on this age of frame.

* be VERY careful tapping out the pivot shaft and then the journal bearings... they scratch very easily and will compromise the suspension action long term. you can however do the whole job without any specialist tools... just patience and care

* the turner website has a pdf download of a fantastic pictoral guide to striping the bearings down and rebuilding... essential if you are going for a repaint.

* bearing wear seems to be less of an issue on the HL frames than later DW link frames

* aside from the dropout pivots, all the bearings are the same size (unlike with the dw link), so it's easier to sort out relacements

* you can use vaseline to lubricate the zerts... this is WAY cheaper than prep-m grease etc, but is a similar viscosity (advice from mr turner himself)

* if you ask greg @ turner nicely, he'll send you lots of pink turner stickers (well he did for me!)

hope this helps.

It's zerks by the way.

Turner designed the 2005 HL 5spot around a fork with and a-c measurement of 510mm. The pike breaches this by 8mm. Whether or not you like a slacker or tighter front end is going to be down to personal preference. Many people at the time preferred a lighter fork to the pike, its not the lightest of forks by some margin, but it did carry a lot of favour with heavier and more agressive riders who like both its strength and its stiff tracking. If you're small and light IMO it will be overkill - you'd get away with something lighter quite easily.

Personally, I've found found bush wear to be about the same on the DW as the HL, But YMMV because I'm heavy-ish and aggressive-ish. Again, if you're small and light, they're going to last longer. On both bikes, its the low down BB pivots that see the most wear on my bikes.

Grinding off paint can be avoided by taking the time to mask the pivot points carefully before it gets powder coated. It's much easier and less time consuming to do this than faff about with paint removal afterwards.

I miss my old HL 5 spot. Man that bike was with me for 7 hard years ridden through wind rain snow sun and dust year round twice a week and never let me down.

Even after 2 years on a DW 5 spot, I still think the old HL was better. Sniff...

Afraid so. Think the early 5 spots were £1600 or £1700, DW kashima rrp was 2200 or 2300 which is just crazy for an alu frame, made in the USA or not. This years price reductions makes them a lot more reasonable. Been big sale discounts from merlin and crc for the last few years too

Catching up ... RP23 on my 5 Spot is great (but anything after the DHX Air would feel good).

Best I had was a PUSH'd Vanilla RCA on my old XCE ... Almost invisible performance.

I've got a push tuned fox vanilla r on my HL 5 spot, with floats up front. It's just lovely I reckon I paid £1500ish for the frame in 2002/3.
Yes it was a lot of money but I'm still riding it, a lot....
Misssteele I reckon Rockshox revs would be good, or possible sectors. If you could stretch to the fox floats I ca 't reccomed them enough

Know it's not a 5 Spot, but (IIRC) my 2006 TNT RFX was £1700 when I bought it new. Must get it built back up sometime seeing as it's currently chucked in a corner of the spare room...

Misssteele - I think you'll get away with pretty much anything at that weight. as a 14 stoner, I'm not really qualified to comment!

Hi there Scienceofficer...I've cracked the chainstay on my 2005 5 Spot (Horst) and it looks like you might have one surplus to requirements? If so, please let me know...

When I was running a Horst Link 5 Spot the shock of choice was the RP3 PUSH tuned & I ran a 130mm fork (First version revelation)

I must have picked up a bargain then recently 🙂

I bagged a 2004/5 (Not sure which year) HL 5 spot off ebay for sub £1k with the following spec...

Large Metallic black frame with black rear triangle and Fox RP23 shock
FULL XTR 971 Groupset inc Brakes/Cranks/BB/Gearset/Cables etc
Fox RLC's (Now changed for some RS Rev 426's off my old EX9)
Mavic Crossmax XL rims/Hubs/QR's
Thomson elite x4 stem
EA70 Carbon bars
SDG Belair saddle
Thomson seatpost
Hope Seat clamp
ODI Grips
Titanium Candy pedals

Looked to have done very very few miles and was pretty much immaculate.
I am in the process of having the Rev's refreshed and the rear pivots replaced, but other than that, she's a beaut.

Fairly light too for an older full suss! 🙂

Oh and Hi, noob alert!

Definitely not stolen!!! LOL

I was happy wth the amount I paid 🙂

It's such a lovely bike to ride and climbs effortlessly!
Although I have been considering selling it as I have become fairly OBSESSED with road riding recently!!

I don't think I could part with good old Tina however!
