I am looking for some advise on 20" tyres for my lads MTB.

Over the last few months he has really started ripping up the trails around the new forest and wareham. I am looking to change the current tyres as they are the ones that came with the bike new and seem as hard as granite and i believe the cause of  couple of offs, size is 20x1.95.

Would upping the tyre size and volume to 2.0/2.1 or higher be advantageous over the jumps? would this have a negative affect when riding tarmac on the school run?

Tia

Going from 1.95 to 2.0 or 2.1 is going to make a negligible difference when riding tarmac bit also when riding off road.  Sounds like it is the compound and type of tyre rather than size.  Luckily a 20 x 1.95 tyre is a BMX tyre so you could try some BMX race tyres (may not be durable) or better some BMX dirt jump tyres which should grip well.

Kenda do a small block 8 in 2.1. Ebay is probably the easiest place to find them.

Schwalbe little Joe are pretty good and light with the folding bead. Seem to work well on different surfaces and come in a 2.0 width

Which 20 inch are they? The BMX race 20" is bigger than the mtb 20" so be careful there.

My lad has Schwalbe black Jack's on his mtb and they're more than good enough for a little person. They grip well in all conditions and are fairly light, also tough which is essential and have a puncture belt thingy in them.
