hey folks.. im thinking of changing my gearing as ive started climbing steaper stuff! i currently run xt chainset with x0 shifters and rear mech.. was thinking about 3 x 10 as i feel i 'sometimes' i feel like i need another gear.. but i hardly ever use the big ring up front. im not all that clued up about ratio's etc but was wondering if a 2 x 10 set up would do?
Sounds like 2x10 would be fine, not sure if there's any advantage over having a standard 3x10 though.
What's your current set up and why the "need" to change everything?
I love my 2x10 and have only been defeated by a hill once (due to having too much travel and not being able to keep the front end down) I also have a 3x10 and find it doesn't offer any advantage, just more effort to find the gear I want.
I currently run 3 x 9 xt chainset, xo shifters,xt front mech and xo rear mech..just not sure if the lowest gear on a 2 x 10 set up would be low enough to climb as im thinking i sometimes find wanting for a lower gear on climbs?
Thing is, if you have 3x10 and you can't "find" the right gear, well, to be frank, without wanting to sound too rude, you probably could do with a bit of tutition?
IMO, unless you go 1x, then there is practically no difference in weight between 2x and 3x (you still need the shifters and front mech, you still can't use a chain device at the front etc), all 2x saves you is the weight of a single cog at the front, which is what? 40g?
Having said that, it depends what you ride, but i like to use the "Mountain" bit in my mountain bike, so i use all of my 30 gears! (yup sometimes even the crossover chains ones you shouldn't use........)
Having just gone 1x10. 32t front and 11-36 back I don't think I'd go back to any more gears. Seems unnecessary now. I even managed to cycle up the Scorpion at Mabie in the lowest gear. So I guess that passes my uphill test. 🙂
Depending what bottom gear on rear cassette you use, can get lower bottom gear with 2x10, my 2x10 bottom gear is a 24 front 36 rear, which is lower than my xc rig 3x10 bottom gear, which is 22 front 34 rear, don't know if this helps?
