So I was thinking of doing France North to South coast off road but there aren't enough Green Lanes (VVT) to do it mainly off road so I'm looking for suggestions in the UK.
I'll have 1 - 2 weeks. Ideally Gravel / Tow path / light off road 30 - 50 miles a day. Ideally long distance paths and if I can make a circular route all the better (saves the hassle of getting back to wherever I start from). I'm based in Bristol but happy considering starting from anywhere....ta

Train to scotland. Make up a route using maps, geograph, and read scotroutes and epicyclos suggestions on here( plus maybe mine?) for places to go.

Last year me and t'missus did this - a mix or small roads and estate roads. Inverness / Garve ( road) then to amat and ullapool ( offroad) then tiny roads to lochinver and kylesku then offroad over to near Ben hope then wee roads / forest tracks back to inverness via the black isle. More road than we intended as we got fed up of climbing!

Another year we did Callander / Killin / crianlarich / Glencoe ( offroad) then chickened out of the devils staircase so road round to kinlochleven then offroad to Ossian / laggan. Road / a9 cyclepath to dalwinnie and dalnaspidal ( again chickened out of a big offroad climb. Offroad to kinlochrannoch. We had intended offroad to bridge of balgie and road back to Killin but as it was raining hard bailed to pitlochry

We have done a variety of other similar tours - other highlights include glen kinglass and bridge or orchy to loch lyon ( estate road on the ground but not on the map)

All done on tandem with trailer and with little hikabike. Geograph is very good for working out if something marked on the map is cyclable or not.

Edit - I can give greater detail on these routes if wanted.

I reckon you could do something pretty good in mid wales. The middle is littered with sheep tracks and 4x4 routes. The roads are very quiet too for the link up bits. Maybe look for BOATs around there and see if it links up. I know the bit around Elan Valley, Nant y Aran and Machynllyth is very good and you can add in Strata Florida

Personally I'd persist with the France idea. Here's possibly the most obvious long distance all-terrain route (includes extensive notes and GPX files and half an hour of videos to watch):

It's not a circular route but most trains in western Europe are very bike-friendly, or there are airport options, or the ferry back from Bilbao.
