650b+ rim with 40mm i/d
currently running a 2.8 Maxxis but they are £50 a pop!
How would a 2.4" Chunky Monkey or similar blow up on such a huge i/d rim?
I don't think it would be great.
What Maxxis were you after? I have some lightly used 2.8in High Roller 2s to sell actually.
I had a 2.4 on the back of a 40mm id rim it was pretty squared off but it worked on the back id not have wanted it on the front though tbh
Jeff Jones used to advocate using 2.4 tyres on 45mm rims to get more volume and allow lower pressures, mostly before plus tyres but lots of people did it with no problems.
I've used 2.4 and 2.6 tyres on 45mm rims and it was fine, it did feel a bit nicer cornering after I changed the front wheel to a 35mm rim though.

Yep, I ran a 2.4 Ardent on a 40mm WTB Scraper for a few weeks out back. It was, as above, pretty squared off, but just about okay as a rear. Some of the WTB plus-sized tyres come in quite cheap - Wiggle has the 2.8 Ramger for 35 quid. Not the best tyre ever, but okay for a rear.
No issues.
I've a 40mm and I've done 2.3, 2.4, 2.6 all good.
I ran a 2.4 Ardent on a 45mm rim for a while, it was a bit square but ran ok. As has been said Jeff Jones recommended this and he,s no fool and not in the least bit bothered by fashion.
Specialised has some cheap 2.6-2.8 tyres in their sale. Picked up a butcher before Christmas for £25 in 2.6”. May be worth a look?
I've got a 2.5 on a 45mm rim, seems fine in use
