I’m going to build a set of 29er wheels for my new HCH
30mm or 35mm inner width rims?
2.4 or 2.6 DHR2 in the back?
What does STW think?
Depends on the frame to be honest, how much tyre clearance does the manufacturer state?
What's an HCH?
I can fit up to 2.6 29er tires.
HCH was supposed to be Hardcore Hardtail but i now realise that Harcore is one word Doh!
For the rear, I'd go 29x2.6 but faster and lighter keep the grippier DHR/F for the front.
I run 29x3.0 and am sold on the wider tyres. Loads of grip without going knobbly on the tyres. I'm into very technical stuff too.
Ah that makes more sense!
I have a Bird Zero 29 which easily takes 2.6s, and I've tried a few combinations (all Maxxis) so far. My feedback is as follows:
Both 2.5 and 2.6 DHF on the front is great. Loads of grip and loads of volume for comfort.
2.6 DHR II on the rear. Loads of volume and grip bit can feel a bit draggy
2.5 Aggressor on the back is a good compromise when it's dry.
Through the winter used a 2.4 DHR and 2.5 shorty which was a good combo.
@andyg166 and @warns74 thanks thats helpful.
I already have a 2 sets of 27.5 plus-ish wheels for my frame but want to try 29 again as well.
Has anyone tried an Assegai?
check out the michelin wild enduro gumX front / rear (£30 merlin/tredz) ,
been running my chameleon 27.5x2.8 and a 29x2.4 front
with 30mm internals it looks a right beast, i was looking at someone elses bike with the same front tyre on the other day, his Rims hope tech (24mm??) made the tyres look proper skinny..
Meant to add, running those combinations on 35mm rims.
