Is this combo ok?  It's a 29er

Or do I need a wider rim?

Looking to buy some new wheels

Advice appreciated

cheers

I've never had problems with it, with 26" wheels. No idea about the new tyres designed for wide rims. If I was buying new wheels, I'd go for wider rims though.

I used to run 2.35 Dampfs on 19mm Mavics along with so many others.  It will work but won’t be ideal - if tubeless and very low pressures you risk tyre rolling off rim under hi G if that’s your thing and the tread profile is unlikely to be performing as designed - you may be overemphasising the centre and barely giving the edge knobs a chance to do anything.

Ideally you want more rim but now that such wide rims are available, ‘how much is too much?’ is a relevant question.  25-30mm will certainly be fine, opinion becomes divided as you get beyond that - several recent threads here on the subject including one of mine.  I’m holding my breath to see how 2.3 on i35 looks...

I've not had a problem either. Bitd 2.3s etc went on mavic 717s, but that was normal. But as you are buying new, you might as well go for wider given that there are lots of options that are wide and light. Probably 25 for xc and wider from there up.

I ran this on the front of my Whyte on the standard wheels. Swapping to a wider Rim did improve the profile but it will work just fine as is.

IME it’s workable with some compromise on tyre pressure, but it’s not ideal. I found 21mm noticeably better for that size of tyre and if I was buying wheels with those tyre sizes in mind I’d probably be looking for around 25mm. (Caveat: I only ride rigid bikes.)

Depends, what's the compromise?

If you want a wheelset that will do CX and MTB then yes it's fine. I've got a pair of Hope Hops that width for sale on the classifieds, they're fine with 30mm CX tyres and 2.4" trail tyres.

If all you want to do is run 2.1-2.5" MTB tyres then it'll work, but you would be better getting something wider.

As others have said it'll be fine. However I went for 30mm internal rims, they look ace 🙂

FatNotfat 29er wheels are ~20mm internal rim width IIRC (Reet'ard rims), I've got 29x2.35 G-One Speed Evos and 29x2.3 BSC1 (rebadged Vee Speedsters).

IIRC, both tyres are stamped approx 25-50PSI.

With tubes, I typically run them ~35/40PSI (front/rear), for fear of bead disconnecting due to slightly bulbous tyre shape, no issues to date.

It'll work but you'll need to run higher pressures than with sider rims to stop it folding in corners.

By how much I don't know!

Thanks Guys - much appreciated.

I think I'll go for wider rims.  Probably better in the long run even though I tend to run at higher pressure  -  30 - 40psi

cheers

The solution to that is, go wider and tubeless. There's no point running tyres at 35+ psi for the sake of it.
