Went out with the kids today and they are just getting the grasp of riding off road but gear selection seems a bit of a distraction at the moment. 6yo has 2x6 on his and the two older ones have 3x8. If possible, I think a wide ratio 1x set-up might, for now, let them concentrate on staying on without me barking, thumb left, thumb right etc.
They wont be going quick so I think more at the lower ratio end would be better.
Would a 9sp cassette fit in the 6sp space?
Any thoughts or experinces on this.

Just picked up a 12" framed Hotrock for my lad, but by the time he fits it next summer it will have had a repaint. Already started collecting kit to go 1x9. Thinking 32 x 11-34 should do him.

My sons bike has: 34 front. 11-36 on the back
Seems to work, 32 might be better though.

just wondering now if I can change the rings on the chainset....
it has short cranks and possibly riveted sprockets. better check this first.

Don't lose the granny, otherwise they'll walk and be put off bikes.

Just roll with it, and they'll (eventually) learn - well worked for my three.

If they're going quite slowly anyway why not just leave it in the granny or middle gear and tell them not to touch the front shifter?

just to pick back up on this (now the kids are happy the weather is warming up), is the conversion to 1 up front simply a case of ditching the excess chainrings and derailluer? Something like a single middle ring and a bash guard or is it dedicated cranks...
Cheers

No, standard cranks are fine, but you'll need shorter chainring bolts if you don't fit a bash guard. A chain guide will take care of the chain dropping off. Superstar do the XCR one for about £20.

All our small bikes have had front mech and shifter removed at first.
