hi

old age and knackered knees are now forcing me to have a re-think on my singlespeed, so I was thinking going 1x9/10. any suggestions as to what gear ratios I need to think about using would be greatly appreciated. I spend most of my time riding round north Notts with the occasional foray to Cannock and the Peaks. I am running 26" by the way. just advice as to what chain ring and cassette really

1x9 on the DH bike, 11-32 + 36t = pedals happily along a flat and will wind up short hills too (37lb bike!).
1x10 on the AM bike, 11-36 + 32t = crawls up most things really, tops out before a few others though. Might get myself a 34t for less mountainous terrain. If I can't get up it on lower than 36/32, I wouldn't be pedalling for much longer with a granny gear!

11-36 with a 32 on my Ragley- I could do with a little higher gear tbh, but I like spinning it like mad so it's swings and roundabouts. The low gear is low enough for most of my riding, I think the only time I've really felt the need for the granny recently was enduro racing.

It's not perfect but it's close enough as long as I don't expect it to do everything my 2x9 bike does- and there's no risk at the moment I'm either changing it back, or changing the 2x bike to 1x.

11-36 and a 32 up front, ive only just swapped over to 1x10 and have found this the best compromise for the ups and downs.

right. thanks chaps. currently running 34t on the front and kinda like to keep this on as it's a relatively new ring. was contemplating putting on an old road cassette on (11-26) but would seem a bit harsh now.. will try with 11-32 for now and take it from there. not really keen on spinning low gears, but, might not have much choice 🙄

I reckon it depends on what kind of rider you are...

I used 32-12x36 for a while, but found I couldn't get up hills that easily. I put this down to me not riding in the slow-mash method that a lot of people do...

I tend to spin on climbs, 90-100 rpm depending, which I can't do on a 32t. Looking at trying a 28 or 29t chainring to see if that suits.
