Having stuck with my 2x9 drivetrain for some time now my recent stint of extra fixie and SS riding has made me decide that my general riding HT needs a light dose of MTFU / simplification.

So I'm going to be changing to 1x9

Costing it out, a works components thick / thin ring is about the cheapest option, but will it really retain a chain all on its own, as well as an "old fashioned" single ring and chain device set up, especially when used with my (clutchless) 9 speed mech...

Any experiences to share, especially using a 9 speed cassette and mech?

Think you'd need the clutch mech, if not then at least a top guide, so the chainring stops really making much sense at that point.

That was kind of my thinking, the ring makes quite a few promises About chain retention and they do say that its 9 speed compatible... I'm just not in the market for a whole new drive train quite yet...
