I've got my first ever XC race in a couple of weeks (Gorrick / Endura Autumn Classic at Tunnel Hill)
Nearly all my recent riding has been on a 1x9 hard tail (34T at the front, 11-34 rear). Is this workable in a XC race, or will it be a big disadvantage?
Outside of racing I find the main disadvantage is I can't keep things as smooth when it gets really steep which makes traction and switchbacks a bit trickier, but seems like a relatively minor thing.
What d'ya think?
Almost exactly what I use for Gorricks. 1x9 36T front 11-34 rear.
Enjoy the race. My first ever xc was this event last year and I absolutely loved it.
I've done it on the same ratios and although I'd like to I can't really blame the ratios for holding me back! If it's what you normally ride you'll be fine.
Most of the elite field now run a single ring. You'll be fine,

Thanks for the advice. That was the answer I wanted to hear 🙂
Can't wait for the race now!
I'm hopefully doing Tunnel hill too and was seriously considering going 1x10.
Does anyone have any good vids of previous Tunnel Hill races as the couple on YouTube don't show much??

Venue change...Sunday 13 October brings the first of our Autumn Classic cross country race events, which will now be at FRITH HILL, Deepcut, Camberley, Surrey GU16 6SD, the one with the large hard standing parking area just off the roundabout. This venue has a nice mix of gravel bashes, brilliant swooping singletrack plus some tricky bomb holes! It also has some great vantage points from which to watch the racing.
