E13 chainset, xo mech and cassette. All 18 months old. Shifting was sweet, but the ring made a horrendous grinding noise in the 42 sprocket. It was a very worn 32t ring, I changed it for a 30t, again a e13.

The chain was slack so I shortened by two links. I measured the chain and it's just shy of 12 1/16th over twelve links so ought to be OK.

Problem: the shifting is now all over the shop. The symptom is the same as a wonky hanger, I.e I've got the full span of the cassette, but random non+shifts and double shifts.

What have I missed?

Not sure, but I would check and adjust cable tension, b-screw adjustment and work through the process of setting up a rear mech.

EDIT: Further thoughts towards your chainline, is your E13 crank a dedicated 1x? Just that you mentioned noise when in your lowest gear, which could suggest you have (also) a chainline dim that is greater than the advised for a 1x11 (48 -50mm at a guess?)

Yes it's an e13 1x specific crankset which came with the bike, a Canyon Spectral 29er.

Nevertheless, it does make one think. The grinding was caused by burrs on the ring which a mechanic filed off for me, to temporarily good effect. The burrs will have been caused by the chain arriving and departing from the ring at a violent angle.

Hmm.
