Hi guys
Any reason not to go for the deore m5100 rear derailleur over the slx or xt 11 speed derailleur?
It's for my commuter bike so will it make a difference going for the cheaper deore over the slx or xt?
Thanks
Nope, you won't notice the difference.
If you want to spend money on a fancier drivetrain component, buy a nicer shifter instead
Some people on here will tell you that there's little to no difference apart from weight (a few grams on the lower models) and durability (XT has sealed cartridge bearings for the jockey wheels).
For a commuter I'd be happy running the deore. It's a great groupset for that usage.
I have SLX and XT, and I quite like having an adjustable clutch on the XT. That's all.
Pretty sure the SLX clutch is adjustable as well, you just need to take the cover off to adjust it.
As Nixie says, you can adjust the SLX clutch by removing the cover. However if you’re a bit ham-fisted (like me) you might over torque the cover bolts and then round them when trying to remove them again!
The XT has clutch adjustability without removing the cover. I now have an XT.
Microshift 11spd derailleurs also work with Shimano.
The XCD RD-M865M Rear Derailleur is not much more than a Deore, but is more like SLX/XT build quality. Better clutch system (IMO) too.
Many thanks for the replies. Will have a look into it.
I did do some reading before where I'm sure some people said the shadow plus is more fragile then a non shadow plus, what about just shadow compared to a none shadow? I won't be going off road at all.
The shifter will be an XT one. I have a 10 speed system on my other bike which you guy recommended and it hasn't missed a beat in a few years. Been perfect.
That was a xt shifter. Slx cassette and derailleur 1 x 10. Superstar narrow wide ring.

Ooooooh I'll take a look!
Pretty sure the SLX clutch is adjustable as well,
I can confirm it is.
I can also confirm the slx cover bolts are made of cheese and will round off as soon as you look at them. Make sure you use a decent hex key otherwise your mech might not be as adjustable as you hoped.
If you're never using it off road just forget about Shadow. I have an old 9sp Deore on my commuter and it's never dropped a chain, even on a fast fire road descent.
I've found SLX develops play in the bushings/pivots a lot quicker than XT. I only use XT these days, as they are better value for this reason.
Thanks guys for the help
