Piecing together a 1x10 setup with an 11-42 cassette, n/w Oval ring and hoping to re-use the existing XT long cage mech. Is this likely to work with just a bit of b-screw tinkering or will the lack of clutch ruin things?
It will function fine but you will risk dropping the chain on rough ground due to lack of clutch on the mech to keep the chain tensioned.
It's not a big deal if you have a nw chainring. Maybe if you ride v fast on rocky trails.

Feels fast to me but I doubt it does to anyone else. 🙂
Will see how it goes before I shell out for a new mech. Cheers.
It'll be fine. You've got a Bullet Bros. device, right?

Oh right, sorry, I forgot it's not 1997.
I found one of those cheap chain guide things like Superstar do for £17 to be just as good as running clutch mech & a narrow wide...Well, it was better TBH, I ran a chain guide, with a standard XT mech with an On One chain ring off my SS & never dropped the chain once in all the time I had it. Same can't be said for the 3 bikes I run with clutch mechs & narrow wide chain rings...
Clutch really doesn't do that much, it's the narrow/wide that's doing all the hard work. Let's say 10% of the job. Worth having IMO and if nothing else it quietens things down which is pretty nice.
+1 narrow wide.
You might get away with it, depends on the age/condition/springiness of the spring in the XT rear mech.
You won't die and it seems to work ok for some. It didn't work for me (spongy old SLX mech) the chain dropped on fast rocky chutes and jump sets even with a NW chain ring. Obviously a chain guide will change that. If you plan on going 1x11 further down the line, I reckon an 11 speed mech is the best route rather than faffing with chain guides, unless you already have one.
Watch the clutches on Shimano mechs. I've set a few up where the clutch has been way too resistant from the factory, which makes shifting shite on the biggest sprockets, until it's slackened off of course!

Get a Dave's Chain Device if you're back in '97 again
