I'm in the process of converting to 1x10, from single speed. I need a new bottom bracket anyway, as i currently have  an ISIS RF crankset which is knackered, and a handy spare square taper set.

How do I figure out what BB spindle length I will need to suit the 1x10 set up? I've read that I need a chainline measurement of approx 47.5mm, but how can i figure out what that means in terms of spindle length, without just resorting to trial and error and multiple BB purchases!

for more info: crankset is an FSA Xtreme (originally a double ring set up i think) and i'll be running a 38t NW chainring with SRAM GX 10speed clutch mech and 11-36t cassette, and the frame is a Kona Unit (2006 model).

Have you got a bike with square taper bb handy?

Or an old bb to try?

I just fire it on and measure the chainline.

Work out how much i need to come out or in then add or subtract double that from the bb length you have*

*Then probably just use it unless it actually doesnt work.

The most popular size is 113mm so I would start there if you can't find any better guesstimates. The only part the frame that's relative is the width of the shell which will be either 68mm or 73mm.

That was my best guess... i figure if its somewhere in the middle ground I should have enough wiggle room to make it work. Thanks All
